I’ve been fascinated with this over the last few weeks 
What is really stupid about the situation is the Mazda infotainment system runs embedded Linux which of course shouldn’t require a file extension to use an image. It is probably lazy software engineering, I mean, There shouldn’t be a case where a system like that gets caught in a boot loop due to something funky in the cache.
As a side note. It shouldn’t be as easy as it is to get into the infotainment system to begin with considering the infotainment system on the car has direct canbus access.
