Found a deal too good to be true on FB marketplace for a 12u Startech rack on wheels for 80$ +10$ shipped.
The seller blocked me after i made payment, but i did receive a package⦠i received a RisingRacks 12u. worse quality, completely different MFG but i guess at least i received somethingā¦
Picked up all this equipment for $380 this past weekend on OfferUp. Two Dell r710 with dual xeon and 97GB RAM each. Two Dell r310 single xeon and 32GB RAM each. Cisco, Juniper, and Netgear switches.
Planning on full virtual lab with proxmox. Starting with Kali purple (cloud hosting costs are ridiculous considering the data ingestion) and using the lab to test various enterprise equipment. Totally agree with everyone else here. I started with an Odroid xu4 8 years ago and am now just working into a setup like this. Get started anywhere you can.
Wow! Way to make a houselab a homelab! I was already impressed with the full-depth rack but am even more impressed that you can run that somewhere that the noise isnāt a bother. I tried running real servers but it was just too impractical for my little apartment life.
Also always excited to see more proxmox out there! Iām relatively new with it but itās super cool!
My homelab really didnāt even start with a dedicated machine. I had a ātotally legitā copy of VMware workstation pro that ran a few VMs so if you donāt have any budget at all, give this a try. Thereās github repos out there with keys out the wazoo (but you didnāt hear it from me )
Thank you! I love the wholesome reference Proxmox is going to be a steep learning curve for me Iām sure. In the past Iāve always just run virtual labs on a beefed up laptop or desktop. And I may or may not have utilized similar methods of acquiring vmware I figured it was time to learn something new and the deal was too good to pass up. I started up 2 of the r710ās today and I gotta say I was actually surprised how quiet they were, especially considering the open rack. Resetting iDrac tonight, install proxmox, and then hopefully have purple up this weekend. !
Ah all my servers were 1U units so they had tiny fans just screaming. 2U gives a lot more room (you could say, twice as much) for the fans so they can move more air at slower/quieter speeds.
Man if you have the enterprise module, iDRAC is a dream! You can do literally everything from right at your desk with no need to go touch the server. We use it at work for everything from mounting virtual ISOs for installing operating systems to general loss of network checkups to nuking disks for recycling.
Report back as your lab grows and matures! Iām sure weāre all excited to see what you do with it!
Including quieting those fans. I was able to adjust my fan offset and quiet those puppies down without affecting the temp (they run high all the time even if your box is chilly). Google command line idrac management
@CoreySpondant that makes perfect sense. Iāll compare the two models today and let you know if I get a similar result. And Iāll definitely keep you guys updated
@amal Thank you for the tip I will definitely make those adjustments assuming room Temps allow it.
I dont know now what i am supposed to do with this Rack that i have seemly received for free⦠The email i got saying i was refunded doesnt mention anything about returning it, and the seller blocked me so i cant even ask whats up.
Keep it or rehome it! Back when I browsed r/homelab there were a few tales of people getting multiple mini racks from Amazon when the skid wasnāt broken down at the warehouse and then helping out fellow homelabbers in need.
Yeah, but i did kind of just screw the scammer. I know i got scammed, but now i feel bad that i did just screw this guy out of some of his own moneyā¦
Do a good deed with it like @CoreySpondant suggested and then one hand washes the other. I wouldnāt feel guilty knowing I got scammed, administrative mistakes allowed a refund, and then I gifted the scammed item to someone in need for the sake of furthering their knowledge. Itās a win/win IMHO.
Donāt forget about that pfSense VM, itās one of the most useful or useless things that you can have on your home lab. But having a decent router is always a good thing.
I think that Iāve mentioned this already but I used to have a Mikrotik on my desk, partly for home lab reasons.
