it’s a lighthearted accusation i know dean well - at the same time though, i should get free stuff too if it wins ![]()
I figured.. it genuinely struck my curiosity bone though.
For example you cannot trademark a common word.. but you can copyright it I guess? In theory you could copyright the words of a meme, but I don’t know if it would actually hold up to legal scrutiny. Apparently just changing an image doesn’t count as a copyrightable thing anyway? Unless you hold true to the idea that a picture is worth a thousand words ![]()
Not technically, but I feel like it should count as plagiarism if you make a meme from an artist’s comic and crop out their signature. Remixes of the cropped images do not count though as they do not know.
eh.. i dunno.. plagiarism to me means I’m trying to pass off another’s work as my own.. so if I took an artist’s comic and cropped out or removed the signature and presented the work in its entirety as my own, definitely plagiarism.. but if I took a crop of the comic, added extra “meme stuff” to it so it’s clearly a meme.. then no.. not plagiarism because 1) everyone understands its a meme that uses existing art and cultural references, and 2) understanding the references (pieces of art etc.) and their origins is part of the point of a meme. I have made art using your art yes, but at no point is the “art” in question (the meme) considered to be 100% original by the audience, nor is it monetized in any way.

I didn’t mean it counts as plagiarism in a literal sense. I meant that I feel it “should” count as plagiarism in the metaphorical sense because you are actively cropping out the persons signature who created the art. I meant it more as a symbolic consequence than a literal definition
