Iām a bit jealous now.
I know I have said it before, but @coma , Your English is absolutely impeccable, If you didnāt tell us that English was your second language, I would never have any idea.
I am properly impressed and envious of your language skills.
Even though
Would be more correct if it was envious, BUT a lot of native English speakers misuse / confuse Envy vs Jealousy.
Homer defines it best
Haha - well, you got me on that! I frequently read both words in this context, but envious would definitely be more correct ![]()
But, you neednāt be
of my language skills, for itās people like you who actually shape them ![]()
Oh, and Iāve got quite a nice translation page for all that special vocabulary I miss sometimes ![]()
Interesting; how / what do you use?
Do you have a google Google translate tab open or something similar?
I have (maybe) passable Spanish, but I donāt know the words for either Envy or Jealousy in Spanish, If you were me, what would you do to add them to your vocabulary?
I use Linguee - at least with my usual amount of adblockers, itās a very clean page, and I like that they show the words you look for in context - sometimes makes it easier to get the grammar right and all that.
There is an option to translate English ā Spanish as well, and I just checked - there are different Spanish words for envious and jealous, so, there might be some differentiation as well ![]()
That is great, Thank you.
I have just started learning Indonesian also, unfortunately, it is not on there.
But I will use the shit out of Linguee for my Spanish.
How does this translate for you.
āI will use the shit out of Lingueeā
Does it make sense?
I guess you would understand through context more so than the actual words!
Iāve been taking Spanish classes for 4 years consecutively now and I still donāt think I could hold a conversation with a native speaker outside of small talk.
Youāre welcome - I really like to use that site, makes life a lot easier
Feels a bit like cheating ![]()
It makes sense, and I totally get what you mean - though, a literal translation wouldnāt be very helpful in that case⦠But thatās what I like about languages - after a time, you get a āfeelingā for the language, and you start to understand it more āinstinctivelyā, in a way⦠thatās the point when conversation starts to become fun.
I think you would be similar to me, (But my teacher is DuoLingo ) Iām sure we could understand what was being said and also get our point across, But probably very painful for the person we are trying to communicate with.
I find reading it OK.
Eavesdropping on conversations very difficult, just key words and filling the gaps myself.
If somebody speaks slowly I find it much easier. Immersion would probably be the best way learn it quickly.
Only if you rely on it, not if you use it to fill those knowledge gaps and learn from it.
Pretty smart if you ask me.
Here comes the Envy again
Thatās a nice one, too! I use it to learn Dutch, currently - or, at least I try toā¦
Sadly it doesnāt provide Icelandic, yetā¦
Thatās what I try to do, and why I like that context-thing on linguee⦠you can understand the daily use of the word you look for much faster that way, and thatās especially great if there are different similar words you could use, and you have to decide which one to takeā¦
Nah, no need for that - I have this āfeelingā for exactly one single language (except for German, of course
). And thatās the most common second language in the world - so, I use it in gaming, reading news, watching TV, getting around in every foreign country where I canāt speak the local language⦠I have the opportunity to use it a lot, and thatās the best thing to do when learning a language.
And I learned it at school for⦠9 years or so⦠and had great teachers, mostly ![]()
100% I have had a few conversations with the owner of my local mexican restaurant just because Iāve known him since I was a child so I know if heās laughing at me itāll be funny for the both of us. But I wouldnāt dare do it in someplace like Spain where itās their native tongue.
That I have gotten pretty good at just from my assignments. Just have to look up a word or two here and there when I havenāt heard it yet.
This kinda differs for me, I can understand when the guys at the restaurant are talking shit about a waitress or something just because Iāve heard the repetition so I memorize it ![]()
But trying in say a grocery store or something is a bit more difficult.
Hope this one helps! Bandana + hair over it⦠in green outline: ![]()
Wise words!!
Iāve spent about 2 years learning Japanese⦠got to Japan and needed to play Charades with everyone I tried to communicate with⦠![]()
2 Weeks later, having no choice but to talk in Japanese (surprisingly no one speaks English if you go away from the touristy bits)⦠and I was chatting comfortably to random folksā¦
I mean⦠2 measle Weeks of immersion were able to teach me far more than 2 years studying!
Even all I know of Italian (can hold a decent conversation) comes from living with an Italian who user to talk on the phone in Italian all the time.
Those things make me wonder about how the heck our brains work on those ādo or dieā moments. ![]()
The only problem with Immersion learning is grammar. ![]()
I mean⦠I can hold a great convo in Italian or Spanish⦠and can read it without a fuss. But if you ask me to write anything on them without a translator⦠oh boy, thatās gonna be UGLY! ![]()
Absolutely love that!
And when you reach that level, you also open up a lot for the whole culture behind it! ![]()
Okay so Iām having trouble finding a particular video on YouTube and thought maybe you guys might be able to help.
Itās about cyborgs specifically Neil Harbisson. But it also brings up a woman who is deaf or blind or something of the sort and her implant that I also canāt remember what it does
and maybe she even had a relationship with Neil or something? Not sure, but all the videos I have found are about him or that girl with the horrid magnets rejecting in her fingers.
Edit: It was Moon Ribas ignore this
Yeah, so hard to tell the two apart. Just ask Helen Keller ![]()
Just mentioned her here:
https://nextnature.net/story/2020/moon-ribas
Yeah thatās what made me think of it. So I decided to search for her instead and I found the video lmao
You might want to look up her kaleidoscope project as well. Thatās from around 2007. I found it interesting.
or ask the Pinball Wizard
Haha, @anon3825968 , do you know any jokes about Helen Keller?
I heard that deaf, dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pinball
