Ironically, I couldn’t pass the captcha until I enabled another device, while AI, of course, have no difficulty in passing captchas. I’m forced to conform my behaviour from natural human behaviour, supposedly in order to look less like a bot.
I like the distinction between cognitive offloading and cognitive surrender. As I put it, we may automate the execution of our decisions, but should not automate the making of our decisions. I’ve thought of a few metrics that I think can be used to estimate the degree to which the machine is being controlled by the user as opposed to the user being controlled by the machine, but it remains hazy.
Good essay. I really need to read McLuhan. The medium is the message. Very pertinent.
