Apex Install Mini-Review

Had my Apex Mega installed by Patrick @ Bound By Design in Denver. Great experience overall. Patrick was knowledgeable and through.

I went in initially expecting to have the incision on the top of my arm, elbow side, perpendicular to the bone. But after talking with Patrick, I ended up going with an incision on outside of the arm, parallel to the bone (with the skin). Partly to minimize scaring, and also since I kind of wanted the chip to be a little towards the outside anyways, making it easier to rotate my arm for desktop scanners.

The installer made the pocket slightly hourglass shaped to help prevent migration. But that, combined with the side insertion needed a lot of tries to get the implant in. I lost count, but I think it was around 10. Each time the installer would make the incision or pocket just a bit bigger.

Overall though, very happy with the experience and chip itself. It is day 3 now post-install and I can read the Apex 95% of the time on the first try with my phone (Galaxy S23 + medium/heavy Spigen case + MFGC repeater).

In hindsight I probably would have gone with the perpendicular option on the top of the arm, as I actually would like a small visible scar where the incision was as a marker to orient my phone. Right now I’m using a small indicator on both my arm and the top edge of the phone case. I hope that it will become muscle-memorized soon enough though.
