2 years ago, I purchased a CNICK ring for my Rivian.
They took my donor key card and made it into a ring.
Worked great! Until I shattered it last week.
Long story short: a car ran into my wife while we were in the parking lot. I shattered it, banging on the guy’s window. Everyone is fine. Including my wife. A lapse of judgment on his part and my own.
Anyways… CNICK doesn’t offer this service for Rivians anymore. Nor will they offer to use the existing chip from my ring in a new one.
The chip part of the ring is undamaged as far as I can tell. And it is still 100% operational.
Is it possible to re-encase the key in a new ring? If so, how much would that cost me, and what is the estimated turnaround time?
I was playing with converting cards to rings @ home earlier this year, if you have a fdm 3d printer and some time to tool around, I can run you through my process and you can try to make your own ring conversion at home? The TLDR is use PVA filament to make an inner ring mold, fill it with resin, then dissolve it away with warm water. Melt your card and recover the electronics from it (or in your case, salvage your chip and antenna from your old ring), wind that around the inner piece, then insert that assembly into a second PVA mold and overmold on top to protect the electronics. Melt away and done. There are some finer points I’m leaving out but I have done that successfully on a couple credentials and cards.
