Cyber Security MumboJumbo. a.k.a. Instagram Hates Cyborgs. a.k.a. Cyborgs hate Instagram

I meant about worrying with being tracked by TOR, or getting properly encrypted messages being decrypted…

I totally agree with you that the most steps we can take to raise the cost of personal data farming, the better. Even if only to make a hole in those companies pockets.

Although there is a limit to where people would go in sacrificing the usability of the internet for them in exchange of being an idealistic…
:woman_shrugging:

It’s not idealism. I’ve experienced first-hand what big data does to your life if you’re not careful and things go south. And that was before big data was even a thing, and Google was still a nice little search engine in California. It’s a long(er) story for another derail. But suffice it to say it was a wake-up call. It took 15 years for that single mishap to stop coming back to haunt me every time I went for a job interview.

I agree.

But humans do have a psychological “layer of abstraction” that works to dissociate them from that: “bah, that will never happen to me” or “that is exaggeration”… all because facing those issues head on would cause most people to freeze with fright.

Hence why, for most people, this is Idealism.

Idealism is still there, no matter if the cause is “real”/“serious” or not.

Rosco… I’m seriously a tiny bit proud that I actually follow some of your paranoid (not in a bad way^^) footsteps

Yep. Same here! Annoying, but you get sooo much less spam… no freakin’ popups, no ads, it’s almost… peaceful

Now this is something difficult for me - for mobile, I had NewPipe, worked great, but sadly no longer does… and on my desktop, I am just too lazy to search around which of the invidious instances is working. It was all okay as long as it was one simple page, but to search again every time is just getting on my nerves…

I downloaded it (because of solidarity and that “you get on a NSA list if you download it, and the more people who do that, the more idiotic this list will be”-urban myth), but rarely use it… If I think it might be a good idea to have an extra bit of anonymity, I have it here.

Totally - I use it for navigation as well, and I have not found any downsides to it yet.

Same here… the day I get too lazy to enter a username / password when I want to log in to something is the day I should stop using the internet.

I use startpage, because I heard that DDG has its servers in the US still, which might lead to security issues… or maybe not, dunno.

I know my list is far from being complete or “secure”. I know there is a lot of room to improve. But I still aim for some convenience if possible (though I’d never ever join a zoom room, for instance), and I know I am of little interest for most “serious” attackers. So I just try to annoy the guys earning money with my data a bit

Agree on that! Got no instagram, no facebook, no anti-social media shit…^^

I think it’s a good time to rename the topic to something internet security related.

Also, Rosco!!! FMSW, your browser settings are indeed in paranoia mode!
Free to be judged, but I don’t give a toss about leaking data. My name is my real name…etc

Renamed!

Damn, we really have more in common than I thought

And yes, paranoid is right. But as the saying goes, it’s not because you’re paranoid that they’re not out to get ya.

Yep. It’s been broken for at least 8 months. And Youtube without any filters is shockingly rotten with advertisement. No thanks.

Well, have I got a treat for you: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/invidition/

Remember: getting on TOR is 10% of what you need to do to make TOR work for you. The other 90% is strict Javascript-less browsing, and going through ALL the browser’s features (including quite a lot of manual config in about:config if you use Firefox). It’s so important that the TOR people feel compelled to release a special fork of Firefox with all those things configured - the so-called TOR browser.

There are quite a few. Mainly, the adresses are still all over the place in remote places. But I’m okay with that: it gets me to the start of a street and I can find the house number by myself, like a big boy. If it’s an area I care about, I’ll contribute to OSM to fix it.

I don’t trust any search engine. Either they’re in the US - which, as you know, has legally turned companies operating within its borders into as many potential snitches, if the companies themselves aren’t in the business of making a dishonest buck at your expense - or they’re in Russia or in China, which is hardly better.

DDG says they’re full of good intentions. Google used to say the same thing: see how much “do no evil” was true in the end… I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if DDG was exposed to be lying all along. Also, DDG is basically Wikipedia search supplemented by Bing. Not great, but the least bad of all the non-Google search engines.

Startpage is supposedly Google Search with more privacy. That sounds as workable as alcohol-free vodka or fat-free butter.

As for Bing, well… it’s Bing. Not much good unless you look for kiddie porn. And it’s Microsoft behind it. They don’t rate as high on the list of heinous companies as they used to - mainly because Google stole the crown, but they definitely are to be avoided.

Finally, I also use Qwant from time to time. It’s bad, but it’s not too bad. At least the badness isn’t the same as the others, so they might have the answer when the others don’t, without hitting Google Search. It’s based in France, which isn’t the US, but don’t think for one minute anything in France is safe from state interference. France is quite amazingly anti-free-speech.

All those search engines only have one redeeming feature: they don’t feed data to Google quite as easily.

Just wanted to say. I have a feeling it’s gonna be popular topic.

Well, thank you, good man!
YouTube with enough adblockers is kinda okay, but this is even better :+1:

Yep, got that one as well… but usually, I’m too lazy to use it, I must admit. But I can, if neccessary

Hmm, okay - didn’t have that issue yet, at least in Germany and the Netherlands it worked fine for me so far. But I’m able to read good old analogue maps as well, if I have to

If I got it right, startpage kinda redirects the search request to google, just anonymized. Or at least that’s what they claim to do - I have no way to prove that myself, but there is a pretty nice club about digital rights, privacy and all that in Germany, and they recommended it. And let’s put it this way - there are some safer alternatives, but they are of little use if I can’t actually find something with them…^^

I think that’s actually funny… when I was young(er…), Microsoft was the big evil of all times. DOS was generally accepted, but basically since Windows came out, Microsoft was the devil. Since we have Google, nobody bothers about Microsoft any more… don’t think that’s a good sign…^^

Microsoft is still evil - it’s part of its genetic makeup as a company - but it’s lost its edge. It takes a Bill Gates and a Steve Ballmer to make it truly heinous, and they’re gone. They’re kind of like nasty old pensioners: you don’t like them, but at the end of the day, they can only talk, not really do anything, they’re old, they pee themselves regularly, and they’re kind of harmless in their retirement home. So you forgive them.

There’s more evil out there now - orders of magnitude more evil - and Microsoft missed that particular train quite badly.

Chaos computer club?

So weird… this little pot just ran by with a shiny tin Foil hat and yelled “black”. Not sure what that was about

Except that password remains the same… but yes, many small issues are just as bad or worse than one big one.

They’re Chromium based, and have had some security / privacy issues in the past iirc. I’m not sure they’re any better than properly configured Firefox with uBlock Origin + strict tracking protection enabled.

Love this, if only it was somewhat easier to use… so many things don’t use default DNS, and for good reason.

Got any tutorials or tips? Ofc, I’m more about doing that with a VPN from mobile to my home internet connection… for PiHole you know

Not if you add their repo / download updates from their github… you’re correct about the most easy / default FDroid build being broken though.

And damn, have we all seriously derailed this thread. I like the new name!

Interesting. I’ll have to look into that. I must say, I’m a total idiot when it comes to cellphones. Thanks for the tip!

This latest release was 10 days ago: https://github.com/TeamNewPipe/NewPipe

Repo installation instructions can be found here: https://newpipe.net/FAQ/tutorials/install-add-fdroid-repo/

Great, thanks!

Coma hint hint.
