Deciding on implant locations

Hi all,

Planning on buying a few implants but would like help validating placement. I planned on getting a flexUG4 in R1/2, a NeXtv2 in L0, and an xg3 in L2. I’m considering an apex in the future once I have the funds. Would this plan leave room for the apex in either hand or should I move things around some more. My main concern is obviously the HF overlap and having room for adding more down the line if DT releases anything else that catches my eye.

Hi, both the NExTv2 and xG3 locations sound good to me. I have no personal experience with the flexUG4, but I think its narrow enough for the back of the hand.

Is there any particular reason you are getting an flexUG4?

I like the utility of being able to clone basically any Miifare. There’s a lot of hotels that I’ve stayed with that use them. My work uses a mix of miifare and Iclass as well

i can recommend getting some test cards to see if you can clone your work tag(s) if you want that. So you know it’s possible and if you make any mistakes you don’t brick an implant. I almost bricked a NExT.

Yep, I have some on the way already. The LF side of the NExT bricking was a concerns to me after reading the forums. I think the HF side is much less prone to issues?

Yes, the NTAG 216 in the NExT is not really possible to brick if you just write data. I almost bricked mine by writing the wrong data to the config pages, I assume roughly the same goes for the NExTv2.

You got sone great answers above, and funnily enough I was just provding an answer in DMs to somebody else that will suit your situation almost perfectly.

Allow me to copy and paste my answer ( I removed their details )

Hmmm, I wouldn’t.
as an example
My FlexM1 lies over a ligament, which is fine and never caused any issues but not ideal if it could have been avoided.
However
If I was to go parallel like you are considering, in my opinion, this would be worse as you are then going over peaks and troughs
eg, like this amazing visual aid

W

Whereas, if you were to go in P1, it would be nestled nicely in or on that position
like the following illustration that took me ages to compose

or

Remember, the Flex reads better with a parallel-to-antenna orientation.
and as most reader antennas are rectangular, you dont really achieve and benefit by orienting you UG4 90⁰ from a P1 position

is no real advantage

My next question and suggestions for you

Which version of the UG4 do you have?
The original “narrow” or the newer improved antenna one?

If the original, I would reach out to Amal or Tac0 and ask about swapping for the new version, the original is…dogshit for reading.

If you have the new and improved, I would recommend parallel to bone in any of the P1= P4 positions.

All great for presenting to readers

Maybe plan ahead with other implants you MIGHT get.

My FlexM1 WAS my most frequently used, it is in P1 R which is great for presenting to readers.
When my Custom payment worked, it was P4 R

I could easily present to payment terminal without issues with my P1

IF I had something in P2 or P3 with that set up, Isolating them from each other may not have been as easy.

Some separation is good

A P2 and P4 would be OK
equally, an P1 and P3
BUT
P1 and P4 in my opinion is ideal.

Of course, Seperation of hands is even better.
P1 in each hand of your most used implants is a good option.

I am right handed, so for me, I use my phone with my right, so a natural position for my ApexFlex is in P1 L as it is easy to just tap my phone to the P1 L
I could present my Apex to a reader easily (but it is not compatible with many locks)
Also for ease, I have my FlexSecure in my forearm, to the left of my watch, so i just align my phone to the watch strap and my phone antenna lays over my FlexSecure for an easy reliable read; but, that position would be awkward to present to a reader and some serious contortionism would be required

I have my UG4 in P4 L
IF the UG4 was avaliable earlier, I would have put in in my P1 R as it is my dominant and most coordinated hand.
I dont have a problem presenting my UG4 to readers where it is, but the added dexterity of my right hand would be a bonus.

You COULD go for reader specific ie.
Your current reader(s) you are planning on using the UG4 with, if they reader is to the left of the door, you might find the P1-P4 Left is the “best” spot.

Let me know if any of that doesn’t make sense.

but long story short

  • If you have original UG4 swap it for the new version
  • If it was me putting in a new UG4
    I would go P1 R

NeXT in P0, but it should be far enough away to not cause any issues.

100%
I have NExT in P0 R and xMagic in P0 L

Because they are on a different plane by simply tucking your thumb down,
they never cause any issues

Really helpful to understand the distance needed. So the plan now for me (if installer agrees):

L0 nextv2

L2 xg3

L3 apex in the future

R1 flexUG4

You mentioned the narrow being bad for reads. That was what I was planning on getting due it being a needle install, I don’t have an installer that can do advanced installs unfortunately. How bad is the performance vs the ones requiring advanced install

Edit: Nevermind, I think the ones in the store don’t have different versions, I’m thinking of the apex

It is good to be aware of, but don’t really concern yourself about it.

I still love my LF implants, and I have never had an issue with them.

Keep still when writing and you should be golden.
When its written to and you are using it, there should be no issues.

IF something goes wrong, it can often times be recovered.
