Ordered the testcard kit with all the fixings and the EM41xx version of the kbr1 constantly buzzes and flashes red when plugged in. I opened it to see if there was something simple I could do to fix it and saw the tiniest little wires coming out of it. I delicately held it together and took a photo.
Any ideas? The wire looks fine, very solidly soldered onto the board. It does blink green and buzz a “correct” sounding sound when I use one of the numerous included LF tags but does not “type”. Also shout out to the packager for my request to draw some Dino’s, top talent! Its even colored in!
Unfortunately not. It was getting power and recognized that a card was scanned though so I’m not sure if its a power issue. The HF kbr1 worked fine plugged into the same port using both included cables
You’d know better than I but I recall the OG HF version being the culprit on more than a few occasions. I can’t recall an instance of the newer LF version having this issue. But I’ve been wrong before haha.
Generally this is, as observed above, a power issue. The exact amount of power the HF vs LF readers pull isn’t really known but the behavior is. Try disabling power save or low power settings for your USB ports. This can be done in Windows or sometimes bios firmware.. but the easiest way to diagnose is a powered USB hub.
Small update the reader works when plugged into a docking station. So I believe the issue was power. The t5577 card didn’t work with the reader no matter how I positioned it. The other fobs that came in the kit did work though, some of the other cards did not work unless I positioned it near the actual chip. Probably due to the small antenna size on the reader. Thanks for the troubleshooting steps and things to check out with it. I wanted to get it to work with my work computer but there must be some settings disallowing automatic writing or something with the windows hello feature.
No it was the brand new untouched card, though it figures that I missed something since the other fobs do work. I’ll try cloning one of them and trying it again.
I’ve got one of these.. @tac0s we should do a power test on both models.
If they draw more than th default USB power budget for devices that don’t specifically negotiate their power requirements to the USB host, then proper operation will depend exclusively on the USB host controller chip and BIOS/OS configuration. The kbr1 USB chip is Chinese and definitely does not properly negotiate for power, so it’ll be interesting to see exactly how much power each model takes on average.
