M0422a vs Titan for Sensing

I’ve recently spoken to an installer who’s told me he has some titan magnets, still fresh in the autoclave bag, ready for sale and install with no markups over DT’s prices (aside from the install costs). I’ve heard generally good things about the titan magnets but am keenly aware it’s not available anymore, probably for some good reason that I don’t know about.

I’m interested in a sensing magnet, so the other option I was considering is the m0422a. Is there anyone here who can compare these two magnets for sensing uses? Which one do you guys think would be more effective/longest lasting? I’m pretty sure the m0422a’s cheaper, which isn’t a small thing for me at the moment, but I’m not sure by how much.

What do you think?

If they actually said “autoclave” then I wouldn’t touch that Titan. Autoclaving will take it beyond a neodymium magnet’s Curie Limit.

Has some (more than one) titan magnets (plural)? Somehow I seriously doubt they are legit. Only individuals actually purchased titan magnets and the only person I can recall that purchased in any qty is not an installer. Ask them to send you photos?

My words, not theirs. I should know better than to post after beers. They just said it was still bagged up and sterile, I assumed that’s how it was done.

I think they said they only had a couple, so I’m assuming two or three. This is a pro installer (not naming names in case I want their last magnets lol) with a buttload of other stock too so I don’t disbelieve them, but I’ll ask for pictures if I decide to go ahead all the same.

Either way, proving it legit or not is a problem for down the line. How do you think it’d compare to the newer models?

I have seen that, though I never bothered noting the titan’s numbers as I figured it’d never matter to me. What size was that thing? Looks like it’s as strong as some of the heavy duty ones on offer now? Surely too big for sensing, maybe I’ve mistaken the purpose of this one.

I assume size and shape play a role in sensing capacity too, so field strength isn’t the only important thing to look at right?

If I remember correctly you want as much strength as possible in as little mass as possible

The titan, despite being relatively small and lightweight has an impressive field strength, which in theory should mean it can move itself around easily and that’s what you “sense”

I’m not sure what the mass difference between the two is, but they’re similarly sized:

Titan: 4.5mm x 2.8mm
m0422a: 4mm x 2.2mm

That’s the kind of info I’m looking for. Sounds like the size difference is minor but the field on the titan’s much stronger.

Anybody have any expertise on their comparative longevity? Or any common issues that came/come up for either model?

Late titans were eo sterilized and came in pouches.

But multiple with even a lingering suggestion of autoclave make me think of simco.

Early batches yes. But eventually that got upgraded to EO gas and sterilization pouches.

Mama mia, put the legitimacy thing out of mind for this thread. I’ll make another about that once I’m gearing up to get something put in.

Anything wrapped in titanium will outlast your meat.

Legitimacy is hard to put of mind. Not many titans were made and they have been out of production for a long time.

Titan user, here. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the name is intended to convey the material it’s constructed with (medical-grade titanium permanently encasing a magnetic core) rather than the magnitude of its lifting power compared to other magnets. I remember being a little underwhelmed by how it (in its bag) didn’t seem to stick to my refrigerator very firmly. What I didn’t understand at the time was how well it responds to other magnets and magnetic fields, and how well you can feel it reacting when it’s in your fingertip.

I unfortunately can’t compare it to newer options available now, but I can say that I’m very pleased with it. The titanium shell is thin where it counts (to minimize distance between the magnetic poles and the outside world) and strong enough that I expect it to easily outlast me/my finger. (Whichever expires first.)

Regarding why they aren’t made anymore, I believe it was difficulty in producing more titanium shells of sufficiently high quality for another batch. (Titanium is difficult to work with, the shells are remarkably small, etc.)

Agreed. Titan will always be the best IMO. However, I’m considering a m0422a for my left hand but I’m afraid of disappointment in comparison because of the field strength.
