I’ve been looking into getting an implant for a while, and mainly want to start off small with the xMagic. This would likely happen next year, so it gives me some time to think and potentially change my mind (not that I think I will so far).
I do have a question however, are there any (known) plans for an upgrade to the xMagic? I see implants like the flexUG4 use an Ultimate Magic Card for a wider support of different NFC chips. Would the x series ever get such support? I could be overthinking things but I’d rather get some answers from more knowledgeable people first. It would also be a shame to get the xMagic and then have a “better” one come out soon after.
If things go well I do plan to also get an Apex Flex to replace/supplement my Yubikey.
One thing that helped me when I was in the same “wait or buy now” spot: write down the exact things you want it to do next year, then ask support directly whether any of those are on the roadmap. They tend to answer plainly about what exists today rather than what might come, and that answer is usually enough to decide. If your main use is the Yubikey-style side of things, that need probably won’t change much either way, so buying the small one now and treating anything later as an addition rather than a replacement is a low-regret path.
It’s unlikely we will have an x-series like the ug4 because we can’t get ug4 die chips that would fit in the tube form factor. The xMagic is a safe bet IMHO
Fair - I want to get the xMagic since i’ll defo have some use for it, and the Apex Flex is (a bit) more involved a procedure to get put in (I’d rather find out my tolerance for an x-series chip first hah).
This was my first implant I had about two years ago! This is quite solid for a starting chip and learning a lot about the mix between high frequency and low frequency. If you’re unable to get anything out of the Mifare 1k chip, I would strongly suggest the NExT v2 as a runner up for that NDEF partition.
