[Rant] How can a company like UPS still exist behaving like this?

Hello all,

I want to preface this by saying this is a rant. It has nothing to do with Dangerous things except for the fact that DT chose UPS for shipping to Canada. I’m guessing they chose UPS because of their great shipping rates. Here’s why their rates are so good:

Context:

I ordered the Apex 2 Champion Edition. It came out to 1,473 CAD including 27$ for shipping. I ordered it on Friday, October 2nd in the morning. DT was so fast, they created the shipping label an hour later and shipped it the same day.

On the 5th, I saw that the tracking had an update stating that I had some duty (tax) to pay. I knew I would have some tax to pay since I didn’t pay any on the DT website. I was surprised to see this:

UPS wanted me to pay an extra 151$ as an extortion fee over a 72$ import tax.

I knew UPS had some sort of extortion fee, Post Canada is much reasonable usually 9.95$ which I’m happy to pay, but this is simply daylight robbery.

I did what I usually do, I call them up on the same day at around 1PM, stating that I would like to Clear the package myself. Doing this is a bit of work. I have to get a list of document and travel to the closest Customs office. Once I get the receipt from the CBSA, I need to send it back to UPS so that they can deliver the package to me.

They send me back the required documents the next day at 9AM (6th). I went to the CBSA office right after work and sent back the receipt. Turns out, ups forgot to charge me for province tax (144$). I have no doubt that if I had paid directly to ups, they would have charged me back for it:

Here’s where the fun starts:

Once I sent the email, they didn’t reply. After 24 hours, I called them to see what was going on since I still saw on the website I had to pay. They said they receive my receipt and all is good. The original delivery date was on the 9th of October and they said they would deliver it with no issues regarding the import fees.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t home at the moment of delivery and they gave me the first delivery notice:

I called them up later in the day to ask for some clarification. They gave me the same scripted answer that the package will get delivered on time with no issues. They also said that they were going to call the depot and make sure they deliver it this time:

The last delivery attempt will be during the work day:

So @amal @tac0s @Pilgrimsmaster if my package gets sent back Tuesday, at least you’ll know why.

Hey, I work shipping in a Canadian company (not associated with DT) and I have a couple tips and pointers for this kind of situation:

Self clearing is an option. On high value shipments it can be worthwhile.

UPS fees are some HOT bullshit, but often if you pay for expedited shipping it can reduce brokerage costs as opposed to what you get charged for it with standard shipping. Ymmv with this one.

If your local UPS store will let you, I highly recommend having your package held there especially on a last delivery attempt. If the staff there are chill you might be able to plead ignorance on the brokerage fees and get them reduced or waived. It’s worked out for me!

UPS especially has been awful for using crap robotic answering machines for customer service lines here in Canada, if you mush the zero button or say “agent” you should get a human faster. Ask for a case number before you hang up. Without it there’s never a chain of clear documentation about what you’ve been promised or what is supposed to be happening with a package. I swear the CS agents are getting told not to give these unless asked explicitly and it blows. I’m sure if DT has to pay return shipping they’ll love you for handing them a way to say “we shouldn’t be paying for this when UPS said it would be delivered and it wasn’t”

Most departments have direct lines which will save you some waiting and being transferred while you fight it out. A few good ones are:

18006687100 - international inquiries
15064473588 or 18883648455 - brokerage

Some good emails are:

canadabrokeragecs@ups.com - brokerage

preferredca@ups.com - “preferred” customer service

custsvccaen@ups.com - general customer service

Good luck and eat em alive, champ.

Naw, but I do need to re-read stuff before I reply, I didn’t even process that you had already self cleared. Do’h!

This is all just little bits and bobs that I’ve picked up doing the job for 6y lol.

Best of luck!

In all seriousness, this is very helpful. Thanks for sharing!

On another note, I got my package!

Apparently, it’s a good idea to leave a note on your door stating that you self cleared, paid already and that there might be an error on the website. The delivery guy was kind enough to leave a note to what drop off point he was going to leave it at.

Also, on an earlier call, I was suggested to call UPS as soon as I have a tracking number and to let them know that I would self clear. This, according to them, makes it so we don’t have to jump through all those hoops.

Yeah, but your info is invaluable and useful, so others that vist this thread later will have some great pointers to consider and things to try
