First Use and Updating IronOS
When received You get just the Iron, Tip and the Manual. It is very Barebones.

Tips are standard across the TS101, TS100, TS200, PinecilV1 and V2. They are all interchangeable. They slide right into the iron and are secured with two phillips screws on the front and back. Different than the TS100 as it uses a hex head to secure the tip.

Prior to first run i always update. The update process for the V2 differs from the V1 as it has switched from a DFU firmware into a Bin file firmware that needs an updater. Pineflash is a great GUI utility that uses blisp to update the firmware.

For Macos it is easily installed with a few commands

git clone https://github.com/Spagett1/PineFlash/
cd PineFlash
curl -L "https://github.com/pine64/blisp/releases/download/v0.0.3/blisp-macos64-v0.0.3.zip" -o "blisp-macos64-v0.0.3.zip"
unzip blisp-macos64-v0.0.3.zip
sudo mv ./blisp /usr/local/bin/blisp
cargo build --release
cd target/release
pineflash

The updater is very straightforward. Hold the minus button while plugging in the iron. Once plugged in the updater sees the iron. Choose your firmware and click update:

Once updated you will then have the bluetooth function available on the iron. With bluetooth enabled in the app you have access to the web monitoring software.

First Run and Impressions + Comparison

For those that are aware this is an upgrade for me from my old and trusty TS100 that i have have been using for the past 5 years. When i first got my TS100 i was skeptical because it is small and i thought it was going to just be a Novelty iron. I have not pulled my weller out of storage since moving. This TS100 has been my go-to just because of how simple and quick it is. I liked it so much i even upgraded it to use USB-C by adding a USB-C PD Board and running the wires into the iron and connecting it to the Barrel Jack power input.

The Pinecil is almost the same iron but with a snappier processor and added BT functionality. I didnt expect much to be different when plugging into USB-C and starting the iron up, but Holy Cow i was wrong.

Side by side comparison of the TS100 and the Pinecil V2

The Pinecil V2 took about 10seconds to get up to my soldering temp of 320*c
TS100 took about 50secs.

This is almost instant on from a cold powered off state. Absolutely amazing

PROs
• Instant on (10 sec)

• Gyroscopic Screen switching is much faster and more reliable than TS100

• Web Interface gives a good window to monitor the temp and power draw. Can aso set temperature.

• Native USB-C

• Compact, no additional tools or cables needed.

• Pricepoint is VERY attractive for Beginner DIY’ers.

CONs

  • Bluetooth is cool but the web interface is niche and not necessarily that useful and it doesnt include darkmode

Optional Reccomended Accessories

Stand and Tip Cleaner - $12.19

Replacement Tips - $39.99

Case (3d printed)

Transparent Shell/Replacement Shell - $13.07+shipping fr Germany
SUMMARY:

Excellent Soldering iron for Beginners or Advanced users. Build quality is great, iron overall is great. Big fan of what Pine64 has made.

I like my TS80 but I am really tempted to get a Pinecil v2 just so I can integrate it with Home Assistant:

What would I do with a Home Assistant integration for my Soldering Iron?

no-idea-idk

But I want it!!!

While writing this i was thinking about home assistant and how or why this would integrate and i have nothing other than plotting the temp and power it uses and allowing you to have it on display somewhere.

The TS80 is a great iron also. id say only get this if you really want to be on the new new and get bluetooth or you are tired of waiting an extra 20seconds or so to get up to temp.

At my work we have a badass JBC soldering station and when you pick up the iron it automatically turns on the fume extractor. That could be a good automation to replicate. (Unless you feel like spending an arm, a leg, and 3 testicles on fancy JBC tools)

you know. that may actualy make me want to actually start using my fume extractor

Fume extraction and making sure the iron is off when the room is unoccupied.

Busy as hell last couple weeks, but been working on the following with custom voice assistant:

“Hey GlaDOS, what temp is my SolderingIron at?”

and: “Hey GlaDOS set SolderingIron to 349 degrees”

I forgot to mention.

For anyone interested in a USB-C Ts100 (my old iron) DM me your address and it is yours if you pay shipping. would love for it to go to another maker or someone that doesnt already have something better.

Ill edit this post when someone claims.

Oh man, I picked up a pinecil last April after Zack Freedman showed his off and I am beyond impressed. It’s quick, easy to use, and the tips swap out super easily. Its power situation is especially nice as it takes USB-PD. This means you can run it off a power bank if you’re soldering somewhere unconventional like a car. I got the transparent shell and haven’t looked back. Like you, Mr. Spiced, I haven’t touched the other soldering iron I own since the pinecil is so much more convenient to use.

The pinecil is a shockingly good value and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking to get in to soldering or who wants a more convenient to use soldering iron.

I used a Pinecil the other day and liked it very much so I’ll probably order one. It’s significantly lighter and more plasticky than the TS80P, but it’s still a very usable iron with a more powerful heater.

If anything, I’d recommend getting the Miniware portable iron stand, it’s the best one for this size of iron. And I personally like the chisel tips, but most irons, including this one, come with a cone tip.

I have this one and I’m a big fan.

Yes, but those are too clunky for a small portable iron.

This one is better on the go:

Pfffffft, amateurs :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Mini clip on thing, and a small jar of brass shavings for tip cleaning.

Man and here I am using a plastic totally meltable 3D printed base like a chump :upside_down_face:

(timestampped for your pleasure)

I mean my current setup isn’t necessarily compact or safe, but it’s very convenient…

Just a quick update.

Little over a month of soldering with this guy. i couldnt have been happier with this purchase. and it was such a small purchase given the quality of life improvement this has been. Which is shocking because i really enjoyed my previous Iron.

If you are on the fence about the Pinecil give it a shot, i promise you its worth it.
