Got myself an R710 from a friend for $60.

Canā€™t wait to get it up and running.

I hope for your sake idrac is updated.

I had to incrementally update for hours and hours and had to even boot up an old windows 8 laptop just to access the insecure http web interface for 5 updates

My ā€œlabā€ is more hardware testing than anything else ā€¦ and Iā€™m about to add an asa tracker to the bench

I suck at networking, need to learn one of those days

We may or may not have to deal with ancient iDRACs at work and an outdated google chrome portable installation has been a lifesaver (I think itā€™s version 70 or something lol)

This is part of why i like dealing with supermicro servers. Their license keys for IPMI are based off of the mac address of the IPMI port and you can generate your own key to unlock all the features including updating the BCM through the web interface.

Update:
Got some rack strips and shelfs to better organize stuff. Put the 3D printer in the rack as well, time will tell if it stays in there. Not quite sure where to put the filament box.

Otherwise, itā€™s coming together really well I think.

I think next step is to get a proper router in place. Iā€™m thinking either Mikrotik or OPNSense. If anyone has suggestions for something that has at least 2x10G SFP+ and 4+ gigabit Ethernet, Iā€™m all ears.

No IT here, but got a new toy for the bench

Absolute OPNSense beast right here. Can actually route 10G traffic easily. Also supports 4G/5G secondary WAN.

Can that run pfSense instead and still route 10gb?

It is a pain, but in both of those houses I was renting so I didnā€™t have a choice.

One tip for finding screws (and other bits of stuff) on the floor is a UV flashlight. Just donā€™t be surprised if you find out your pet had an accident that you never noticed :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I rented a place in Dallas a few years back and i ended up buying a roll of that clear thick plastic used for chairs to roll on to protect the carpet (and my deposit) and that worked well enough. If i were to do it for a lonnger time i would have used that AND like some laminate flooring.

Why not both? A vintage old money mansion with a dedicated lab, mechanical and electrical engineering shops, and a VR room with enough space for the maximum tracking area of 100m^2 that the Valve Lighthouse system can support.

Gosh, I miss having a half decent home labā€¦

If that was me, Amal would have a significant research budget for working on full body replacements. And he would also be debating the details of his third private jet purchaseā€¦

And Iā€™d have a home lab thatā€™s not limited to half of my deskā€¦
