So I’m an absolute slut for auctions. There’s a 24U server cabinet on govdeals currently at $10.00 in Henderson KY. It ends at Apr 25, 2025 02:41 PM CDT (about a day and a half from when I post this)

If it wasn’t a 2 day round trip, it’d be mine. Just thought somebody might want to snatch it up. If you’re close, that is.

Still an auction slut, but I’m interested in this one for myself. Was hoping somebody might comment on it, a.k.a. knowledge is power.

THE AUCTION IN QUESTION

It’s a couple of mid 1990’s servers. I’m mostly interested in the smaller tower as a home for my R720. I’m assuming the servers themselves are e-waste. Maybe I get lucky and there’s a big 'ol UPS in there someplace.

Thoughts?

I think that’s a bit massive but if you have the space for it do it

Yeah, I hate sitting on the floor to work on stuff. The lower half is basically just there to get the rest up to an easily accesible height.

Really I just wanted to know if the contents are mostly too outdated to worry about.

definitely outdated and it doesn’t look like there is a UPS. I’m interested in the RS/6000 though so I’d come buy it from you if you get the lot. It has absolutely no use to me pther than fitting in with the other ancient Unix machines I have.

I’ll make an attempt at it and if I snag it, we’ll do something.

Cool. Maybe I can trade you a UPS for them.

I have one that I use for various things, it was just the one thing I could think of that I’d be able to make use of.

I’m a noob. Big Noob.

Added the wopr from hacker boxes.

I actually just bought the kit from HackerBoxes today to do this!

Are you using this model? @Hamspiced

That’s the one! It arrived today and I immediately put it together. I liked it so much in going to do a couple others in different colors

Although I used this rack mount stl instead of the one from the guide.

It’s nice but you can’t use pan head screws. Need flat flush mount

Ohh want. I haven’t seen this before, I need to add this to my list. I love blinking lights

Alright this was a fun rabbithole that triggered a tism.

The device from hacker boxes uses a pin that is required for Wifi to actually function. So i couldnt create a web interface. I wanted a web interface so it can pop online and pull down subscriber counts or let me control the intensity and scroll effects.

So i made a second one. used three of these:

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2251832463832355.html

and a ESP32 Dev Board.

VCC 3V3 Power (5V also works, but 3.3V is safer for long runs)
GND GND Common Ground
DIN D23 Data Input
CS D5 Chip Select
CLK D18 Clock

Make sure they are all wired In=>Out

Download the updated code from my git. Set a static IP, or dont, just hit the IP address.

Enter your Youtube API Key and UserID
Enter your Instagram Key and ID

Set intensity, speed, duration etc.

STL’s for the Rack Mount for the Ali-express version. Its slightly longer and needs an extra 8mm

side brace x2.stl (84.3 KB)

back.stl (185.4 KB)

Main x2 Extended.stl (74.1 KB)

That’s super sweet @Hamspiced !

I finished putting mine together on Friday! I got the kit from HackerBoxes but I swapped the Red LED matrices with some Green ones I got off Amazon:

Next step is to make a version of the WOPR animation for ESPHome. That way I can have it display the animation normally but if there is a issue with something in my server rack I can show a notification on it using Home Assistant.

Yall put me to shame, my server is sitting on some 3D printed block inside the rack because i don’t have the right bracket to actually hang it

I finally ran an ethernet cable behind the shelving instead of across the office

Debating wether to keep my old ass NAS and just put the whole thing THe part nummbers your it inside the rack on the shelf or build something in 10ā€ or 19ā€ wide :winking_face_with_tongue:

Mine is on a coffee table, sitting on the bar/cabinet top between the dining room and kitchen, right next to the fridge.

Lab is Lab, and it’s ALL good!
