I like referring to imperial as the weird metric system because it’s defined by the meter and kilogram anyways. I might be wrong about the kilogram but too tired and lazy to fact check myself.

It’s pronounced ā€œstandardā€

My absolute favorite to get metric people annoyed haha… I didn’t make them rules :sunglasses:

For weirdness sake…

The imperial measurement is weight in lbs and the si is mass in kg. But, if you think about it, they have to have units for both mass and weight.

Si weight is in Newtons, and Imperial mass is measured in Slugs.

Further proof that, as a superior system, we will use anything but metric.

Wait until I pull out my ruler with 1/10th of an inch markings and piss everyone off.

Except for Satur9, he’ll understand…

We got a few machinists around here.

Why are nasal sinuses a thing!? Infections in there are painful AF!

Just one more reason to want to be a block of metal instead. This sucks and the only fix is to wait for a week or three…

Anyone got a flex in P1 and another in P3 (im thinking Apex & UG4 [and maybe add an xled in P2 for extra ā€œbling blinkā€) ?
Also, how close to an XG3 can i get away with?

Exactly my setup

You could, but I havent…

I’m saving that P2 for … something else.

Take the following with a pinch of salt as I dont have any magnets.

The following is paraphrased from other Speculations and guestamations.

The installation will affect the location with regards to being careful of where the needle pokes and potential to cause damage, and with regards to a Flex, it could be as close as you like.

The xSeries, You would still want to keep the recommended 5-10mm away and ignore the fact that it’s a magnet due to the ferite core of most other xSeries is insignificant with regards to magnetism.

You can order less than 10 if you use the ā€œOrder samplesā€ link (its kind of hard to spot but you can ctrl+f for it). The per unit price is around $13 I think, but shipping to the US starts at $25.

As for the cheaper cards, I think those are the ones I also ordered. They worked but unlike the Fetian ones they did not come provisioned with the default ā€œtestā€ master encryption key. That meant that they didn’t work out of the box with the Global Platform gp tool. After some back and forth with the seller I was able to get part of the provisioning key and was able to install some applets, but without the full key there’s no way to set the signing policy, set security domains and some other features. The seller insisted I had the keys needed but there was a language barrier and I dropped it.

Probably doesn’t matter for applet testing, but I ended up just ordering more of the Fetian cards.

How’s this going?

Or have I just started another [RANT]?

Turned into a ā€œOh noes! last minute so lets throw more bodies at it!ā€ issue. I went from ~20hours a week for summertime maintenance to ~45hours the last 4 days. Plus today (another 4-5hrs or so). We’ve had 3 diff mechanics out in the last 2 weeks to get things finished up.

Equipment-wise, we’re on Okay standing for the moment. 1 truck still down, but the other two are operational which will last us a couple months until the weather hits. We’re still waiting on our 4th truck (since Oct last year), no idea when that one is going to be ready.
House was re-rented for 1 more year, work contract is all but finished, like 95% finalized but the airline wants us to do more work, but charge them less so they only doing a 1 year contract and hoping to renegotiate next season.

Still no word on my raise, or our bonuses etc. Though they have changed last years TDY bonus to a ā€œIf they return, they’ll get the bonusā€, which sucks for the 1 guy that isn’t coming back.

Our support vehicle with the expired tags also has front-end suspension issues, the struts on both sides need replacing so boss is waiting on the tags/registration until that gets fixed (probably another month or two).

Corporate management sucks, but local boss is doing the best he can.
…

On a completely unrelated note, anybody near Aspen, CO looking for a job this winter? Aircraft Deicer at the airport probably $24-25 an hour (not sure what it’s going to be yet), 6-14 hours a day, 3-7 days a week
We are going to try and hire a couple of local people and just TDY the rest from Denver or Salt Lake City. Just need a drivers license, and pass a TSA screening etc. Ability to pay attention to detail and history of video gaming a plus (3 joystick control system, feels like playing Mechwarrior, it’s actually cool as hell)

So not great then…

Sounds like management needs a shake up or restructure

Yup. Listening to my boss talk about the ā€œgood 'ole daysā€, I guess around ~5 years ago everything changed and got much much worse, the bean counters took over and run everything now.

Pretty much, yeah, 'cept it’s a larger vehicle. No flamethrower (unless something goes horribly wrong), but we do get to spray 180C+ degree fluids all over stuff.

Cockpit:

That 3rd joystick in the upper left gets mounted between the knees and drives the truck from the cockpit.

Hahaha fuck yea…. I used to do that… single man operation is fun

I only skimmed the big post… just saw a very familiar visual I’ll back and read now

We’re doing 100% single-op in Aspen, it’s been a blast so far as long as you don’t mind 70+ hour weeks  3 deicers last season, we need more people and trucks.

Yea I remember that de-icer life

I did a few years at dtw with IDS, taking a wild guess it’s the same company

Ours was a bit worse because our main pad was difficult to drive to… I don’t remember but I think you had to cross a runway? Only been a decade

We jokingly called it the fortress of solitude… we could only drive in or out every few hours

We had no internet… a deck of cards… a tv and exactly 1 dvd of the movie ā€œblowā€ we watched it so much that I have someone past memorized and gone to blocked it out and don’t remember it

My last winter with them, was a mild winter… so it hovered in the middle 30s for weeks… and we had contractual obligation to have full staff if within 10 degrees of freezing

we were a much bigger station… probably 20? vehicles and 35 people at any given time… didn’t do single man operation unless you managed to sweet talk someone

Our main pad was 5 across 3 deep… we did a shit Ton of CRJs and Saab 340s

Had a CRJ taxi into my truck while I was in the boom one year… that was a thing… pilot error heard wrong radio traffic… wrecked his winglet… and I shit you not, he blew the slide to come out and inspect … gas on a fire

I don’t miss the bare hand tactile checks…
Your hands soak up the glycol and look great for the first week… then age and feel soggy the rest of the season

Man… so many sketchy memories… good
Times lol

That time there was a some kind of wire loose my cabs left right swivel joint… and it was sparking… actively… and before we could even assess, heard a knock on my window… fuel guy nozzle in hand to fill up my cabs heater… :skull:… sir please go away from the sparky sparks with your nozzle of devil piss

There’s zero chance he didn’t notice the sparks and decided he some come top me up anyways

Fuel guys are a species their own, people make the cliche joke… but I have seen them smoking in their truck :man_facepalming:t2:

Had a cab auto leveler go out when at max elevation, had to bring the arm in without leveler function with fixed rotation… my windshield was parallel to the ground when I got to the bottom… my ass has -never* puckered so hard

Pilots getting themselves grounded because they new better than us, and wouldn’t shut down apu… and fluid making its way into the intake… or the Saab guys not wanting to do (I forget the operation name) 1 prop/wing at a time… and trusting that their battery had enough juice to restart… spoiler it didn’t and it took hours to get them jumped lol, poor passengers

ā€œChecking the tire pressureā€ of the tire out of eyesight with the pad tower during a rush :joy:
