The official Titan crowdfunding campaign thread

I imagined you’d order the encased magnets from a company.
Why do you need material and tooling?

Material and tooling cost will be incurred my the manufacturer they pass this on to the purchaser. Think things like jig to hold the titanium cases during machining.

Oh this sounds far too interesting again… you know that we want to know more now, do you?

I actually started composing a post, along the same lines, but deleted it (well put a pin :pushpin: in it) until the Titan hype is over and delivered; we don’t want all the members getting all…

Do we?

Noooo, we don’t
But as you know, I just like to hype myself… dunno why, but there’s always something to be excited for
Currently, everyone who wants to and is able to should be backing the titan, and Amal might dig in his drawers for long-forgotten cool ideas and, in some not-so-distant future, throw them into the forum (yeah, in a new thread of course^^) so we can hype again when time has come

There are no “off the shelf” magnets with titanium casings. That kind of thing just doesn’t exist as a turnkey purchasable product, so we have to make it. We are partnered with a magnet company to make the sintered NdFeB discs, a machining company to make the titanium shells, and yet another company to do prep, welding, and finishing… each need their own tooling and setup to make things exactly to the correct size and specifications we require for Titan, and we are pushing some tight tolerances to maximize performance.

It still has limits. Take the flexEM and its derivatives. Really cool, but just not for everyone. Magnets had a lot of pent up demand, thus a lot of potential.

Know what else has pent up demand? Payments. When tech permits, that’s gonna take off hardcore.

Incidentally, the flexEM is a bit of a misnomer: I have Dremel cutting disks that are more flexible.

Whoa I didn’t know how much work went into this. I remember the muslcle-titan-magnet thing and thought you just convinced a company and gave them specs…

unfortunately tech has permitted for several years now, since I put a VivoKey Flex One prototype into my arm a very long time ago… it’s not tech at all, it’s policy and people getting in the way (like always).

hahah!

yeah there were 2 universities and a collection of companies involved in that project, which undoubtedly smoothed the path a lot… but yeah, still very far from a turnkey product.

Last year on the 21st of December I got my NExT installed. With the holiday break for Christmas it worked out perfect to allow healing before I had to go back to work. This really was an ideal arrangement for me.

This year, I took a bunch of vacation days around the holiday days such that I won’t be at work from Dec 19th till Jan 4th.

IF, and that’s a big IF, we get the Titan rolled out in time, I hope to follow the same install schedule so I can really heal up before returning to work, especially as I’ll be doing both hands at the same time.

I guess the point of this is, you might wanna start planning now, cause it’ll be hard to do later if you want to take advantage of having extra time off in the silly season.

Also, when filling out vacation request forms, please put " Cyborg Upgrades" in the “reason for absence” line.
