the whole reason behind them not supporting contactless (to my knowledge) comes down to apple being the initiators of contactless paymemts, and not handing customer data over to Walmart. Walmart wants that data for advertising and whatever else, so they build their own contactless, and only that can be used. I’m surprised they changed their minds tbh

According to some of our northern neighbors, Canadian Walmart’s have always let you tap to pay. I’m not sure if this is due to any legislation, or just cultural expectations. In Canada, every place I went to brings the PoS to you/your table, instead of taking your card and walking away with it to some central PoS. I’ve paid for every recent trip entirely with my hand, which can be awkward at times in the US.
A Canadian friend was shocked when he came down to the US and had to hand over his card at a restaurant. Said it didn’t feel right letting his card leave his sight

You would have to get clarity here because it might just be the EBT tap system.. up there they have Interac which is an interbank card system, not related at all to EMV / MasterCard Visa etc
This is also kind of funny because it doesn’t matter if the card leaves your site or not, the entire system is set up in such a dumb way that always exposed the moment you use your card.. it’s the same thing in the olden days when people would get weird about giving out their bank account details, yet hand over a check with exactly all of that information printed clearly on it without blinking an eye.

I’ve not personally verified, just what I was told. Sounds like it’s been the case in CA since 2020ish?

Sorry for the derail here, but it kind of fits.
I was in a Costco in Canada, and they would ONLY accept Mastercard but not Visa, this is really weird (although, I know why they do it)
I have not encountered this anywhere else in the world, Mastercard and Visa are all but interchangeable.
I had 3 cards with me, but none of them were a Mastercard
I’m assuming it’s not too surprising, but a lovely Canadian lady offered to pay for my food, which I would have never accepted, but fortunately I had and Costco accepted $USD.

Interesting. I knew US Costco stores were exclusively Visa and figured Canada would be the same.
If I were to go to a Canadian Costco I would be in the same boat. My daily carry is all Visa/Amex. At least they let you tap to pay, but I don’t even think I have a MasterCard in my digital wallet either…

this is all so strange to me, all stores that accept cards here in australia take anything but amex and let you do paypass contactless or chip and pin. i’ve never seen a store only take visa or mastercard and being forced to use an app to pay just sounds awful.
