Using Apex Flex on iPhone

Hey all,

I’m coming from an Android device (which works fabulously with my Apex Flex implant), but considering switching to an iPhone mini 13 to get a smaller sized device and wondering how well or if it works with the Flex?

To do some basic testing, I pulled out an old iPhone 7 I had laying around, but I can’t find the Apex Manager app in the Appstore; would that be because it’s not compatible with this old-ass phone, or is there really no longer an Apex manager for iOS?

I also tried to read the NDEFF data I have stored via the ‘NFC Sharing’ applet using NFC tools but was unable to get any response on the phone. It did successfully read my NeXT though, so I know the NFC radio works on the phone.

aligning the iphone nfc antenna with a narrow flex like the Apex Flex is a bit perplexing. I honestly can’t even remember how best to do it. I’ll try to get my test iphone out and play with it.. but basically try very a deliberate list of different orientations etc. start with one, then rotate slightly, test, rotate, test, etc. don’t just randomly try different things.. be methodical about it. you should find something that works reliably eventually.

+1 for what Amal said. I’d like to add that I use the NFC NDEF feature of my implants to frequently wow people at bars and meetings. I’ve learned from those that want to scan my implants that on the latest iphone models try from the top of the phone. The same way you would “share a contact” you would use that same method to scan the implant to get NDEF.

For the apex flex I don’t have to try as hard, but the x implants I do need to get it just right. Also remember that the phone “pulses” for NFC so you have to hold your phone for a little bit in the right spot. I found a photo that sort of shows you the best position for the phone.

Edit: Also, I don’t have an iphone but from what I can see on their app store it doesn’t look like there is an app.

It’s interesting, I have no issues scanning my NeXT, but the Apex doesn’t seem to want to pop in. Haven’t spent a lot of time trying yet though.

Also, I don’t have an iphone but from what I can see on their app store it doesn’t look like there is an app.

That’s unfortunate :frowning: I guess everyone just keeps an android phone around to manage applets? Anyone manage to at least get things like OTPs working on iphone?

I personally could not read my Apex Flex on my iPhone until I put a repeater sticker on it (placement is like this). Yubico Authenticator works for me on iOS, but only on older versions. The changes introduced in 1.11 cause the app to crash when reading an Apex and a java test card I have. 1.11.1 fixed the issue for the java test card but not the Apex so not sure what’s going on there. I’ve just been careful to not update the app on my phone.

Yea, basically this. Fidesmo isn’t a great experience on iOS, most NFC things aren’t
Also, yubico auth on Android still works with my Apex on the most recent version so that’s something.

Does the Cybernetic app work for TOTP and other stuff similar to Apex Manager on Android?

Similar but older UI I think.

@hoker should be able to confirm

we’re circling back around on this and 2026 Q1 priority is to get iOS caught up with Android on basic feature support.

Good news! So sometime in 2026 I should be able to use the above linked Cyberntic app to manage my Flex on iOS?

It won’t be cybernetic it’ll be VivoKey Apex Manager for iOS

Awesome news. I’ll love the ability to recommend Apex to iPhone users without any asterisks lol.

I’ll add that ‎Strongbox - Password Manager App - App Store works with the Apex HMAC-SHA1 applet. The app uses the Keepass database file format, but it adds on some extras.

I don’t have an iPhone but @Vicarious helped me test and we confirmed it works. I don’t remember which model of phone he had, but I think he was using an NFC repeater sticker.

You do need the paid version of the app though. Its either a subscription (monthly or yearly) or a one time $125 purchase.

I think securing password/secret managers with an Apex is one of the best uses of the implant, since it effectively gives you infinite implant-secured storage in an easy-to-use format.
