Who actually manufactured the silicon in my hand?

I was reading Quarkslab’s fascinating paper on their recently discovered backdoors in Mifare classic clones produced by Fudan Microelectronics and it got me thinking about my own implant.

I’m really curious as to who actually produced the silicon that’s now embedded in my hand…

It’s not that I’m concerned about it from a security perspective. In fact, having unlicensed grey-market technology implanted is far edgier and more cyberpunk than any genuine silicon™ will ever be. I’m just very interested to know the origin of what is now part of my body.

Can any of you fine cyborgs shed any light on this? Presumably the ‘Mifare’ and T5577 silicon comes from different foundries. Is the T5577 also grey-market?

The T5577 comes from Atmel. The magic Mifare is from a grey market unknown Chinese chip fab.

Thanks amal. That is interesting to know. I guess it serves the grey market fabs to stay a few steps removed.

Yeah… there is some intellectual property issues there, so the fabs involved wish to remain a bit “shadowy”
