Definitely the strangest ergonomic keyboard I’ve stumbled across.
As someone that hates Alice layouts… this gives me anxiety.
I touch type, but I’m not using that thing…
At least it appears to have plenty of space for an NFC reader.
That’s an awesome find! I daily-drive Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 and love it. It’s great for RSI, especially during long programming sessions. I’ve actually been looking for a decent mechanical ergonomic keyboard, dut dang are they expensive. The ZSA Moonlander is at the top of my list rn. It looks amazing, but $365 is a hard pill to swallow for a keyboard. (I’m sure all the keyboard nerds are scoffing at that price)
The Keychain Q pro series is an excellent board and the quality and support are top notch.
They have several different layouts and are highly customizable. Entry is usually a hair under 200$
Put $1 aside every day for 1 year and you’ll have yourself the keyboard of your dreams in no time…well, in a year
Before i got into custom mechs my mindset was that i wouldnt spend mor ethan 50$ on a keyboard. And i am on mine easily 8-10hrs a day. i dipped my toes into a Keychron Q1. next thing i know im buying 600$ limited run keyboards.
its a slippery slope.
I’m a little late to this discussion lol. I try to limit myself to absolute max 400$ USD for keyboard alone (so not including switches, stabs, and keycaps). But I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t considered multiple 500+ gbs
For all you keebs out there (looking at you @Hamspiced ):
I recently swapped the switches in my Keychron Q11 for Gateron Silent Blacks. Nothing too fancy, but I think the sound and feel is so satisfying.
My setup:
Silent Switches ASMR:
Very nice. My daily uses boba u4s’ because they are silent tactiles.
Since Cannonkeys released a plastic Sat75 I picked up the hot swap board and some new tacticals to play with
I need to stay away from the keyboard crew for a bit. My desk is a mess with the projects I’ve been working on and it just makes me sad…
You missed the opportunity for an Amazing Rick roll
A place to geek out on your KEEBS with other KEEBIES
I’ve been using mechanical keyboards for a while but I wonder if I should build or customize my own.
I normally gravitate towards brands like Razer, ROG, Corsair, or Logitech G. So please by kind and don’t lynch me for not understanding half of the stuff. I know that some of you guys put sand in your keyboards amd other crazy stuff.
You could make a VERY solid keyboard with something like a Glorious Gaming GMMK2 base (nice heavy steel base), some switches, and some PBT key caps.
You’ll have to decide on your keyboard size. 65% is to small for me and I prefer TKL (Ten Keyless) with a volume knob. I prefer clicky blue switches but if you want smooth and buttery you could go brown. Id go with gateron brand switches for a first build. Finally: key caps! I love my XDK keycaps (see pic).
Pick those things out and installing it all is a breeze.
I would love to help you out.
Beginner just getting into it, go with anything Keychron has in the Q series. Excellent keyboards and highly customizable. Very light modifications can get you an amazing sounding board.
If you want to build your own and solder your switches…
Cannonkeys brutal series keyboards are the way to go.
Don’t think your soldering skills are up to scuff, Cannon keys has the exact boards that are in their brutalist series as practice boards with stacked fr4 components. You can practice on that and then buy the brutal and it’s a direct swap.
Want something in between. Zoom has been making waves, great ones at that. I personally use the Zoom75 and I love it. Although I may be switching back to my satisfaction 75 soon just because I miss the feel of a more premium board.
Entry range:
200-300$ completely built
My sleeping skills are not up to snuff… Help! Insomnia sucks!
As far as soldering skills go, I’ve soldered Micro HDMI connectors by hand and QFN packages are no problem for me. I even had to dead bug a few Mico HDMIs to troubleshot a problem on a prototype. So I don’t think I’ll have any problems on this front.
I’ve tried red and brown cherry switches and prefer the browns but I’m open to suggestions.
Also, any recommendations for wireless options?
Ok, that $500 Asus is not looking that crazy now…
Oh it gets nuts, look at the price of keycult boards, or the TGR Jane
I hate clickys but love tactiles.
Look at the Anubis switches.
As far as keycaps pbt is excellent. And I loved PBR seal, but now I rock GMMK Ashes.
If you feel you are up to it you can always millmax a board and then it turns it into hotswap. This is how I made a lot of money in custom keyboards
Thanks for this, been wanting to solder one up for a while but kept getting lost in the “what to get” phase.
My current keyboard has PBT keycaps. Those are indeed awesome!
This is something that I could do to my current board. Is the solder residue that’s left on the original switches a problem if you want to reuse them in a keyboard with sockets?
Same… And I’m also wondering if it’s better to go full custom or to buy an off the shelf keyboard and do a few mods.
Not if you clean it well with flux and wick. I have a great solder sucker (The SS-01) and it does a great job cleaning it up. If you decide to millmax (this is my preferred option) let me know and ill give you the best site to use for sockets.
your return on happiness and overall feel will be better than off the shelf. Keychrons are the best off the shelf value add i would reccomend. However i do not like the hotswap sockets they use. They are prone to being ripped off of the board.
