Damaged xMagic?

Hey all, first time back in a long time.

I never really used my xMagic (maybe xM1? I don’t remember, it was part of the Lifestyle bundle then) much - I tried cloning a few cruise cards to it, but without internet access and such, I never had any real luck. Same with hotel cards. Nothing seems to see it - my phone using TagInfo or NFC Tools Pro, my Flipper, or my PM3 (front or back). If I ever cloned anything right to it, then the chip was too deep or the reader too weak.

I’d been curious about whether or not it was working for a while now because I had smacked the injection location a few times, and I’d had some pretty good hyper localized bruising over it. I know it did work in the past I was able to do some very basic read/write attempts with the cruise cloning. Unfortunately, between moving and ADHD, I never had my PM3 when I remembered and forgot when I did!

Any suggestions for me before I just give in and remove it? (Obviously no sense in leaving it in place if it’s definitely dead.) Thanks!

(FTR it’s also six years old in about a month.)

Welcome back

The xMagic was released about 3 years ago

Phones and PM3 without a Repeater sticker / Booster can be quite particular with placement

The flipper is a little more forgiving and with a MFGC or Flipper Zero Field Enhancer it makes it even better

My suggestion for you is this:

Can you feel the implant?
If not, grab a neodymium magnet to confirm the location
Give it another scan

Here is a picture of a good spot to try to get a read

Hello again old friend!

Good to know that it’s the xM1 - unfortunately the orders didn’t include the details of which was in it since it was just the bundle.

And yeah, it’s in prime real estate, right on the back of my hand between the last two metacarpals, and it’s easily the closest of any of my implants to the surface. Not only can I feel it, I can see it just by looking - not quite as well as one of my magnets, but nonetheless. I’ve also had no serious trouble getting reads from my dedicated gear (F0 and PM3) on this one beforehand, which is why I’m wondering if it’s damaged/dead. I recall it maybe being a touch fussy about orientation, but it definitely read before. (When I mentioned I wasn’t sure if I was writing correctly, I meant purely in terms of data/commands, and also, likely the card type.)

That said, appreciate the tips on getting some of those niffty little stickers because while my phone works alright for reading (Pixel 8 Pro), I’d love to have improved placement options and such, even if just a touch.

Here is a placement guide to help you out.

The stickers are great, they effectively improve range and remove the need for a specific orientation.

Well, that answers that, iits obviously not too deep, not still healing, with a flipper, not likely a reader orientation issue, so it is unfortunately sounding like you have a faulty implant.

I would suggest you:
reach out to DT on the web page,
hit the help on the bottom right
:help:
Submit a ticket (link to this thread)
They may have a few more thing for you to try, and some questions, like your order number.

I’m just pre-empting here, but if you get taken care of, you might consider adding a post here

I should add, that you have a couple of options

The RSP from Dangerous things or MFGC from MidWestGadgets (MWG)

The DT field detector keychain works really well for finding an antenna for orientation purposes, but MWG they also have a field detector that is the same size and shape as the repeater sticker, which makes finding the perfect spot on any reader for sticker placement super simple.

FYI you can also find a bunch of MWG over on DangerousThings.com

including what i mentioned above

Brilliant, thank you!

I’ll be ordering up some of the stickers and such, and I don’t think I ever picked up a field detector, so well worth that too, and I suppose I’ll reach out as recommended. Mostly wanted to make sure I haven’t missed anything, so as always, I appreciate your help and suggestions.
