LoRa Meshtastic

Not a single 18650. You would want dual 18650’s. As Amal started those lights would just be for looks at this point.

I would recommend building a solar node instead of just using this. I built a few in this type of enclosure and honestly for a little bit more you can get a much better node. If you scroll up to my build for solar nodes that’s ideal

I think the whole point is that it is covert and looks like it should belong somewhere, even if it’s not functional. Building a custom solar widget thingy won’t look natural hanging off a pole, and will likely draw scrutiny… probably more scrutiny than a defective motion sensing light would

Then it would totally work. The downside is Lora needs line of sight so your antenna is limited with the range here. But totally possible with a rak device

The pole does reach well above any houses in the area, and a decent percentage of trees. Hopefully this will better the range. Also if the antenna itself sticks above the rest of the pole, the pole itself should not serve as its own obstruction.

Noted, many thanks!

I hope to grab a plenum USB cable or make my own out of an ethernet cable. All it needs to do is supply 5v-1a once in a blue moon for a backup charging method, say near Yule. Hoping to just carefully run it down the pole and wrap up the exposed end when not in use. Probably bad luck to update firmware over it, but should serve the power issue without climbing up.

I update my firmware with Bluetooth and it works great.

I suppose I didn’t realise that was an option

What about lead acid batteries? If you’re going for a permanent installation were weight doesn’t matter, the savings will probably be worth the hassle.

Although I still have to take a look at the charging efficiency of different battery technologies. As I mentioned, I haven’t messed with solar for a while.

Just another reason to implement application layer encryption. Would you trust someone else to fold and pack.your parachute and jump sight unseen?

Has anyone built one of these solar car nodes?

I want to build one but the instructions don’t explain everything

What bit do you need clarification on?, I haven’t built one, but I had a quick look through and it all seemed to make sense to me, but I might have missed something…

The hive mind might have answers…

I’m just an idiot  I misread the section about the screws and found another answer buried in the comments about the usb wiring

I appreciate you offering to help!

No it’s very straight forward.

It’s just a shell to hold the rak device and secures onto a panel.

Yeah I misread the section about the screws. I also didn’t know which wires of the four inside the USB cable to use but it was answered in the comments section

don’t be too hard on yourself, the comment sectio. is not where instructions should be…

I have an opportunity to put a very good node on the tippy top of a 60 ft building approximately 0.9 miles from my place. There would be quite a few buildings obstructing line of sight.

What’s the chances I can get a good connection between them? I’m leaning “poor chance”.

have you tried using a viewshed?

You can also use it to identify other locations

Very good if it is line of sight.
