And now some updates
Fresh picture fresh tattoo themed with my sister (mine above hers below)
Mine isn’t the clearest because it’d been bleeding for a minute

@Coma It’s been a minute. How is the glow in the dark tattoo working for ya?
It’s… interesting?
It didn’t really work out as planned - the finger tattoos faded a LOT. I can still make them somewhat visible with a UV light, but they definitely lost a serious amount of pigments. The lines on my leg, though, are still easily visible with UV light. This leads me to a few considerations…
-
Worst case scenario: My body dissolves the pigments. That would mean they would ultimately fade completely, and I’d be left with a possibly not-so-healthy amount of aluminium in my body. But on the other hand, the lines on my leg are still there, and they do not seem to fade any more (after the initial colour loss during the healing period). I plan on dissolving a bit of the pigments in plain water and watch it for a few weeks or so, and I’m curious to see if the different sizes act differently in that setup…
-
On my leg, I did the first two trys with the larger pigments - they were hard to get under the skin at all, but maybe they stay there better? I know that tattoo inks that are very “thin” tend to bleed out a lot and thus fade more, but given that the size of even the smaller pigments is still significantly larger than the pigment size in regular tattoo inks… dunno.

Finger tattoos tend to fade faster anyways. I knew this before, but it might really make quite a difference. The skin feels very different when poking it as well, and I might very well just not have poked deep enough (because there is not much tissue underneath and it’s more difficult to do that one-handed and I’m a noob at tattooing…
).
So I’d say, the experiment is not going as planned but still far from failed
Hand tattoos in general fade quickly. The skin in your hand sheds so fast you really need to have the artist go deep and dig.
As far as fingers go they shed even faster.
This is a tattoo I’ve had touched up 6 times, the must recent time was in January.
This one though seems to have stuck around much longer. Same artist each time. Lines are getting a hair thicker than when I started.
As far as the UV ink I got on my hand last week. Already healed and barely visible under black light
I was afraid of going too deep and risking blurry lines because of blowout… and because the skin feels quite thin on the fingers. So most likely, I just didn’t go deep enough…
I’ve heard that the side of the finger fades faster than the top of it… but for a tattoo that’s several months old, this looks quite good
Oh hell, that’s sad! One week and almost invisible… do you plan on getting it re-done? The design was really cool, so maybe you can “convince” it to stay if you poke it several times
But from what I know, those UV-inks sometimes fade very fast, no matter where you put them… There are some exceptions to this, though.
Yeah I’m going to wait a month and get it done again.
I have an uneducated thought process behind it.
Scar tissue will help keep it in place …
The tattoo on my finger is 5 years old. On average it is redone once a year. (It has functional purpose that I use often).
Usually at this point it is so faded you can’t see the red hashes.
So my thinking is that the scar tissue that has been created helps retain the ink some how from the body pushing it out… no idea but that’s what I think.
It looks like some form of ruler.
It’s an inch with quarter and half hashes.
No wonder you were avoiding mentioning it, the forum AI hates inches…
its how i measure myself when i pee. and here we just use freedom units.
Kinda reminds me of Adam Savages ruler tattoo he has on his forearm.
Really cool stuff. I’d honestly be really tempted to get one, if I had a practical use for it often enough.
The past 5 years I’ve been renovating 2 houses of mine. I ended up losing 4 tape measures in a month. Said fuck it and got the tattoo. I won’t say I use it daily but I use it very often.

So, I’m kicking around the forearm ruler idea. My take is a single straight line, with hashmarks at the 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 on the top side (like a tape measure), and every .100" on the bottom side. Total length 6 or 8 inches. I’ll probably try to draw up something to give an idea soon. I just don’t want to be too specific so that the artist doesn’t just duplicate my crappy drawing.
Given that it’s basically all going to be just straight lines, I’m wanting to find the right artist for the job. A single crooked line is going to look awful, and stick out like crazy. Plus, some of the lines will need to be fairly fine / narrow.
So…
Any advice on finding the right person for something like that? Been looking online, but I find that’s only so useful. EVERY feedback is positive, so clearly cherrypicked. And it’s not like their going to show anything but their primo work. Doesn’t help that most designs lack the straight square lines I’m looking for.
Also, just cause I feel like bitching about it, why the fuck do all the images have to be on social media? I really don’t need to be fighting off the facebook / instagram / pinterest SIGN UP NOW machine just to browse some pictures. A website is not that hard to maintain. Even if an artist cant handle it, I’m sure most have a niece or nephew who can have a decent website up in an afternoon.
Just to get an idea. It is to scale, but I might need to go down to 6" for better fit. Something to discuss with the artist.
I think 6 is better to avoid the distortion close to the joints. For that same reason you should be careful what position you get tattooed in so that the skin is not stretched or contracted.
Personally I’d remove the numbers and the horizontal line. I’d do something more artistic just because while functional I don’t know if I’d want to see a ruler on my arm every day forever. That’s why I went with just hashes. If I knew it would have stuck I would have just fine different colored dots.
Also with my finger I made it so that I’d I bend my index finger and slide an item up to it, it will rest perfectly at the first hash… maybe consider that in your design by moving it towards your bicep so when you bend your arm its a natural back stop.
