The anti🚫-derailment🚃 & thread🧵 hijacking🔫 thread🧵 ⁉

In a medium that is based on long form text, a contributor should be able to access their contributions easily, preferably in the original format and with the responses as well. This is pretty self-evident I think, because they may want to alter them and use them somewhere else, or send them with the responses to another party to get feedback, or any number of legitimate purposes.

The Discourse UI makes this difficult to do because of the way the interface is designed. You can go to a specific comment of yours, but if you try to select and scroll down the page, if won’t let you copy it. That was the specific use that I was using as an example for why this is a bad design.

Technically it is possible. I was able to copy several “pages” of comments on this thread with CTRL-C by starting the selection and then using my scroll wheel on my desktop mouse to scroll many many posts down from where I started the selection and successfully select and copy them.. but yes the normal UI interaction stops selection after a short amount of content.

Does the Textify option suit your needs in this regard?

Same. Not a huge fan of Discourse either, but at least it’s more usable than a lot of the web these days, even if you do have to learn a new set of hotkeys specific to the site. And I have to use an entirely different web browser just to be able to run it, Discord, and my bank. But at least it’s not as bad as Discord. Or Reddit.

Nifty! Occasionally, when I’ve wanted similar functionality, I put the URL into my preferred browser where the JavaScript fails to execute and results in a similar but probably less perfect effect. This is a much cleaner solution.

Now anyone know how do I tell these dancing little colour dots on my profile pic, “Shush, shush, shushhhhhh, simmer down now little colour dots; go to sleep now” ?

Honestly I haven’t tried it yet. It seems like a good band-aid and definitely appropriate for this context.

There is really no reason to (nor do I expect) change from discourse at this point. I was expecting to lay foundation for a redetermination at a point later in time which was appropriate (move to new server, etc), and wanted to make an impression that would stick sufficiently to make a counterpoint to staying with the status quo.

The plug-in really does cement your service oriented nature and desire to fix things for people, and for that I applaud you.

I think they are only there until you actually open it the first time.

You may be able to go to your profile and go through the back door :twss: so to speak

Came across this nonsense sounding thing:

Make sure to read and accept the almond EULA and have a valid product key before consuming almonds.

Anyone have recommendations for tools to send “large” files privately? Preferably something where the receiver doesn’t need any particular platform or software?

Used to use e-mail, but size constraints and privacy concerns are getting bad. (Well, I need to switch to a better provider anyway. Or host my own server and solve both these problems at once, but in the mean time…)

What an interesting way of assembling words they have.

DARPA
To create and prevent technological surprise for our national security.

But, okay, light to direct the way DNA/RNA synthesises within cells. Makes sense. Light can be used as a kind of microscopic tweezers. (Where did I read that? Was it something you posted?)

This just caused me to remember the dream I had last night. It had nothing to do with implants though. It had to do with a short man wearing a shopping bag for trousers which he said his mother made for him. There was a red lens filter on everything.

My bet is they are expanding work loosely based on optogenetics technology.
