I tried but he wouldn’t give me that.

Just a little check in an a couple of peeps that used to be quite active but we haven’t seen for a while

There are a few more, but if I put EVERYBODY in here it wouldn’t be as special

Total random question.

Is anyone familiar with the insides of cheap chinese drum switches?

My lathe uses one for power and reversing, it has 16 wires and is similar in design to the one pictured.

Basically my problem is that it gets stuck in Forward. I have to twist it real hard to get back to neutral. It has no other problems, just gets stuck in that one spot.

It looks like it has multiple ā€œstagesā€, if you will, stacked on top of each other. There’s a couple of screws that look like they go all the way through all the stages. They were loose. I retightened them, but I think somethings out of place in there.

If I take it apart are little tiny peices going to go flying in all directions?
Is there anything I oughta know first?
Also, I saw a thing somewhere on the internet that I can’t locate that suggested the ā€œstagesā€ might be timed somehow?

I don’t know about that specific switch but knowing if it’s single or three phase could be helpful. Along with the lathe model number and wiring diagram.

TBH, I’d try to get a new switch instead of trying to repair the original.

Curious about an aspect chip manufacturing

I know only a certain ultra pure blend of silicon is used…
they turn it into a large log more or less and then slice off thin sheets to turn into wafers

How exactly do they cut the wafers off the log?
All I can imagine is all the wasted material from a cut, along with needed the wager to be at least a certain thickness to be able to maintain its form until supported on the wafer

This site takes you through it step by step.

Technicians then test the purity and molecular orientation. Its then sent to wire sawing. The equipment looks a giant bread-slicer. Thin wires cut the ingot into silicon wafers. The waste created by the wire saw is called Kerf. Currently some firms are working on creating silicon by simply pouring the molten Si liquid into molds. Kerfless silicon would save greatly on expense as no amount of silicon is wasted!

They then polish the wafers so even more silicon is ground off.

God so much waste

I looked up and the wire cuts were like .5ā€ thick

Soo much waste

Sigh

That there is a cheap-ass magnetic pad to hold screws. Basically it’s a giant fridge magnet. You’d think that it wouldn’t work because it’s magnetic and it distorts the field or something. But…

It works perfectly, face up or face down, for a tenth of the price of the specialized ferrite pad. Added bonus: it stays put on the metal table

Hey lookie here what finally arrived:

Looks like I got me a bunch of ACR122Us. Now all that’s left is to decorate them a bit and field em.

I discovered something today (or rather, yesterday): vitamin D is, like, really important.

I moved to Finland almost 2 years ago now, and there ain’t much sunlight here. But never in my life have I needed vitamin supplements, so I didn’t think about it. And on top of that, I’ve been on medication lately that collapses vitamin D levels.

Long story short: yesterday I passed out, went to the ER, and found out I had 10 nmol/L of the stuff in my blood when 75 is the normal minimum. The doc told me ā€œOh yeah, didn’t you know? EVERYBODY here in the north gobbles up vitamin D pills like there’s no tomorrow. Black and dark-skinned people year round, and fair-skinned Finns may get by with only doing it in the winter. But you ain’t no Finn: you didn’t grow up here, so you should take it year round tooā€.

Well, nice to find out after 2 years. I wish someone had told me…

So, just a friendly reminder if you ever move up north

Same goes for northern states here. Tons of people in MN take Vit D. I do.

Well I’m from the south baby. The farthest north I ever lived before was 51°N. But this is 65°N. I should have known when I first saw houses with residential solar panels installed vertically on the walls

Here has me at about 45 (little degree circle)

So I can only imagine the 6 hours of light you get

FYI, If you are on your phone, quite possibly if you press and hold zero ā€œ0ā€ you will get a ⁰ option and ⁿ as an alternative

Nope. When I hold 0, I get a + sign.

But i got a couple pages of symbols including the °.

is there a forum app for ios?

No idea sorry, I don’t use iOS ( Well haven’t for about 11 years )

If you clear your cookiies on your browser ( I used Chrome ) and then login to this forum, does it give you an option to add a shortcut app? If not, then can you make a shortcut to the forum from the browser, like you also can with Android? (ā€œadd to homescreenā€)

Sorry I cant be further help, but there are a few iOS fans here that may have an answer / solution for you

Hmm I’m in your same latitude, but I’m a creature of the night, so I get even less sun light

Perhaps I should look into this…

I get maybe 30 minutes of sun a day on my way into work… that’s fine right? Lol

Still kicking, …but the ā€œLā€ word.
Also, dissertation year, but there’s gonna be something on the front burner hopefully. :crossed_fingers:
