not weird at all actually… it’s just sad.

RANT IN PROGRESS…

  1. Almost nothing in China has a SKU or part number. Everything is meaningless communist garbage bereft of everything a good solid capitalist business is built on; consistency, reliability, producing a quality product, producing based on customer need. None of this really matters over there, so what you get is just a suffocating deluge of absolute chaotic trash being pumped out the collective Chinese product pipe.

  2. All magic chips come from China because nobody else apparently has the fuck-you-balls to make them, nor the safety of a murky-at-best culture which ensures you will not win as a foreign entity (NXP, Philips, Infineon, etc.) in a fight against a black sludge that is the protectionist Chinese legal system.

  3. Chinese vendors you deal with are often 10x removed from manufacturing, but even the manufacturer will just toss a bunch of ā€œchips you can change the UID ofā€ into a pile and start making things with them. What one person in one company calls a CUID, another person in that very same company will just call a UID… or something different. In fact the whole idea of calling these things ā€œgen1ā€ and ā€œgen2ā€ came from the rest of the fucking confused AF world who operate like normal human beings who want to try to nail down some sort of common naming convention … you know … how language works… like, you see an apple and you apply a symbolic name to it like ā€œappleā€ā€¦ but then you notice there are different colors and types, so you make names that differentiate each according to their unique specifics like honeycrisp and gala and red delicious… but in China, where they have 20 different words for love and over 30 different words for death, when it comes to part numbers… it’s all just ā€œwhatever manā€. How they became the manufacturing capital of the world is beyond me… i mean… i know how… money / cost … but shit man seriously… wtf.

  4. We have had this same issue when we buy parts / chips to make implants with… or products with chips we need to extract… we’ll order 100 gen2 chips and get 79 gen2 chips, 8 gen1 chips, 20 that don’t work at all, and 2 that are something we have no clue about. You can set specifications, make demands, and do basically anything you can think of to establish some sort of inventory control on just what the fuck you’re paying for, but it’s all for not… they will simply never bother and send you whatever shit they have. Unless you fly there and watch over their shoulders, you can never fully trust or count on anything… and forget ever getting a refund… you will never get a refund. At best they will have you roll the dice again and ā€œtry to do betterā€ on your next order… like imagine that shit… you ordered a hammer… i sent you a wrench… you want to send the wrench back and get a hammer… or get your money back… and i say ā€œhow about you order another hammer and we’ll see if we can get it right this time… i’ll even give you a 40% discount on your next hammer order!ā€ā€¦ fuck me.

I once had a conversation with someone about why China is so chaotic in this way, and they said this - The Chinese culture is 100% about how things feel, not how they are. In fact, the more you try to show them logic and reasoning, the more they think you’re trying to scam them. The more you argue about who’s right and who’s wrong, the more they shun you and actively try to harm whatever interests you’re pursuing.

After learning this I tried interacting with vendors using pure emotion instead - Oh I am so sad that I only received 79 working chips that conform to my specifications. My boss is angry and I may lose my job and my family may have to starve because 20 chips didn’t work at all. I dwell in darkness without my full order and I fear my soul may be consumed by demons unless I receive what I need.

This approach only slightly improved things. Probably because I don’t know 30+ ways to communicate the nuance of Death in Chinese.

… i will never stop this rant.

I do OEM service for specialized industrial equipment, i (on more than 1 occasion) got some service request for serial number that didt seam quite right … after some pictures, it clearly didnt look like a machine we made, the suff was slightly off, wrong color wire, wrong screw head, wrong terminal block … turns out, a shop in China made some ā€œcloneā€ copies of out machine to sell in china. we tried to buy one to see, and it got seized at custom for not having th eproper paperwork

I had the same experience when i tried to order bulk blanks for laser engraving. There is a great video of some small shop who went through it, ill digg it out.

Just tried to order a god dammned product key for windows 11.

Had to solve two back to back captha with 9 different puzzles each in order to sign up for a blank account that I don’t want and WILL abandon just as soon as they dump the product key in it, which may take up to 24 hours, so why don’t you just be a good little monkey and go ahead and sign up with your account, huh? It’s free, it’s easy, and it only takes a portion of your soul and all of your privacy.

Whenever that goddam mess clears, then I get to alter the windows ISO so that I can install on a local account (silly me thinking I own my own PC), AND by pass the hardware checks so that I can install without having TPM, which is absolutely non negotiable to microsoft and which doesn’t do a goddamn thing for me.

FUCK MICROSOFT!!!

Oh, did I mention that I just barely saw the notification that they’re going to keep my credit card on file for my convenience so that I can buy anything, anywhere I’m logged in? NO THANK YOU, in fact, just FUCK RIGHT OFF. That was immediately deleted from my throwaway account.

(hey @amal, wanna trade rants???)

I entirely understand the want/need for Windows/etc that some people have. I truly get it, but:

I am very grateful that I was able to move over to GNU+Linux and GrapheneOS (A(ndroid)OSP Fork). I feel so much more free. Yes, it is more work. Yes, some things don’t work occasionally… But I value my freedom and privacy too much to allow whoever these companies are to control my modern existence. Some people of certain political [groups] seem to go on and on about freedom and liberty… Then they pause for one moment to watch a video on TikTok using their Samsung S25 Galaxy Ultra with :sparkles: Galaxy AI :sparkles: and repost it on facebook and DM it to someone on snapchat…

No, I don’t maintain a perfect digital footprint. But a lot of people who know that these services and products are objectively abusive and don’t even try to fight back just a little bit… Come on, these companies are powerful not just because of the people who don’t understand, but also people just being too lazy to try to avoid them.

(@ODaily good on you for keeping your ā€œold and outdatedā€ hardware. If you ever want a Windows key hit me up, and keep in mind most Win7 or later keys do transfer ā€œupā€ in some way.)

Did you make it to the etch mark on the needle? :crossed_fingers:

nope

self install is fine with X-series but the 5G needle is a bit big and deep to not have a second hand tenting thing as it goes in …

For sure. Well, yeah, rejection risk is in the elevated category. I’m thinking good thoughts for ya. :crossed_fingers:

The KT tape method is underrated for self installs imho

thanks, not much more than waiting-and-see now …

i was using a binder clip and pulled it up and back … again works great with X-series, but a bit light for the 5G

The pm3 says gen2, how would I check if it’s configured as gen2 but actually gen4? Sorry, I’m still a pm noob!

Holy… What in the fresh hell is this, and this explains so much.

script run hf_mf_ultimatecard

this will run the gen4 script, in the help (add -h at teh end) there is a command to read teh card. This should let you know teh spec of the gen4.
you can also add a -t to change the card type. If it changes, its a gen4

This will change to ntag210:

script run hf_mf_ultimatecard -t 15

I believe hf mf info can also detect Gen4
