The official Titan crowdfunding campaign thread

So you’re saying you can have a hand warmer implant?

You absolutely can use coloured plastic to colour light. Look up lighting gels.

As others have pointed out, these are usually used on incandescent lights with a wide wavelength band. With LEDs producing usually multiple narrow bands and tricking your eye into thinking its white, you’d need to use a different colour gel or combination of gels than you’d use on an incandescent bulb.

As an example, using a purple gel on an incandecent light works by blocking all but the purple, resulting in purple light. If you wanted to do the same with a white LED, you’d need to block all of the green, but pass some blue and some red - a purple gel will block most of the blue and red so you’ll get something dim and vaguely purple.

You’d be able to get something useable maybe by experimenting with blue and red gels used in combination to get a purple looking result, but because colour is weird and LEDs are narrow band, you’re in the realm of art and not science.

TL;DR: Potentially possible, unlikely to be practical.

This is correct, in the world of theatre lighting, it destroys and discolours the lighting gels - they are a consumable, and its enough heat that it can very quickly destroy them.

Gels have a limited life, especially in saturated colors (lower light transmission) and shorter wavelength (blues). The color will fade or even melt, depending upon the energy absorption of the color, and the sheet will have to be replaced. In permanent installations and some theatrical uses, colored glass filters or dichroic filters are used. The main drawbacks are additional expense and a more limited selection.

I just wanna de-rail for a sec and say I freaking love how this community comes from so many different backgrounds, and your comment just reminded me of this. There is a massive wealth of knowledge here, you’re all so freaking kickass.

Just wanna leave this here, this will be one of my first titan projects

That looks awesome! Could a lid close pattern like this unlock it as well?

Also

slight derail

If anyone knows linux well, is there a way to have two passwords on linux? One normal and one for the kbr1?

im not smart enough to answe this but I found this, good luck!!!

Se preeve alguna fecha para encargar titan a los que no hemos podido aportar en campaña?

It’s not even safe that there will be another batch afaik.

Lo habra, despues de la inversion… Lo habra.
Lastima que no pude apoyar economicamente ya que tuve que resucitar mi pequeño negocio, ahora ya empieza a funcionar, saludos.

chances are good… if all things work out properly then likely in 2021 we will start looking into batch 2… but for now we’re not even sure the welding is going right. we should have first results in a few weeks.

Ok people… the shipment is coming to us now from the finishers. We are setting up now for field strength tests, aggressive testing methods, etc. and designing the sterilization chamber packs necessary to keep the magnets apart from each other during processing.

Unfortunately, the laser etcher debacle is still a thing… we’re working it out with Glowforge now but it’s not looking good. We may not have laser markings after all if this doesn’t get resolved… but we fight on…

I will post updates and photos once the Titans arrive and we can start testing.

Ohhh, Exciting! Can’t wait for those results, and maybe some insights into those processes.

And for the Laser debacle, kinda sucks but it’s not something needed in the end. Would be an awesome little thing to have but it isn’t going to be visible in the end after all.

I’m more interested in the mass cutting of flexes with the laser.
Kinda don’t even care about the etching.

yeah this will also not be possible for the same reason… basically the camera system is not accurate and I cannot rely on positioning of the patterns over the targets. This makes it basically useless for etching magnets or trimming flexies.

We are talking with support now because the sales guy I spoke to on the phone assured me the camera system had a 0.1mm accuracy (like the laser itself), but this is not the case. The system has a single fisheye camera centered over the bed and it uses a flattening algo to show the entire bed… the problem is that the algo is not accurate and the further from dead center under the camera you get the more offset there is between where your pattern is sitting on the target and where it actually blasts. It seems like a bug that is easily fixed in software with some algo tweaks… but who knows if they are going to be able to solve this or if they think it’s not worth bothering.

One saving grace, the upper tier support person who just received this ticket thread actually got a chip implant from me at a ToorCamp event many years ago, so I’m confident that if it is possible to solve, it will be solved.

First, YESSS!!!

Second, don’t worry about the laser. It really feels more like feature creep to me. Once installed it’ll never be seen or matter at all.

I’m more worried about pulling off the install in my allotted Christmas vacation time slot. I’ve been a little financially stressed lately. Hoping I can still afford it.

I’m very excited about news, updates and maybe the first photos of our wonderful community project known as Titan. I think it will be very special for all of us, seeing our Titans for the first time. :star_struck: :magnet: :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

The laser problem… Well… What should I say…?!
I took some time to think about it, and at least for me it would be no problem waiting a few weeks or even months longer (if the laser issue can be solved in some way). I have no specific time pressure for the magnet install but I already have a very emotional idea of my custom monogram, and for me it would be an important thing to know that this is etched to my personal Titan… So as I already said, for me it would be totally worth waiting, even if I will never see it again after the install…
How about the idea (it’s just an idea that came to my mind, no problem if this is not possible) that every backer get the option to decide if they want to wait a little bit longer, until it’s clear if the problem can be solved (even if it would take months…) or if they want to get the Titan earlier without the laser etching?! Because I can totally understand the people who want to get the Titan installed in their holidays to have more time for the healing process.

I can say, those that want a monogram will get a monogram… it will likely involve me doing a bunch of visits to a maker space with one and making jigs and doing a bunch of tests etc.

does the glowforge allow for accurate positioning without the camera in relation to the bed? Could jigs not work with it too?

I’m in the camp of earlier over engraved. I’m too excited and also would like to get it done before moving back into dorms. Also thinking about it, I doubt it would be very hard to determine the polarity afterwards ourselves if needed
