Unless you spit on the sidewalk haha ![]()
Has it changed since the 90s? I mean he deserved it but I swear there was another case where the person just spit chewing gum on the sidewalk or something.

No. Chewing gum is illegal.
Id ove to see the cane here, as it keeps Singapore remarkably clean, including from graffiti.
At least the cane should be open for prison offences. I have never seen the point of sentencing someone who is already doing time, to more time, which, at least here, doesnât equal much by the time parole boards come into play.
Iâd love to see it for juvenile crime too. I remember the mere threat of the cane when I was in school was enough to keep most people in line.
Somewhat, but i would hope the same crime would receive the same punishment.
Rule number one, especially when in another country.
Donât be a dick.
They called singapore a fine city
Off the top of my head, that would have cost them about SGD$1000 guessing around USD$700
Spitting and gum with both get you a fine
Spitting + gum = SGD$2000 = ~USD$1400
If you look at South America, youâll see the same thing but the norms are more about merging with others. You canât be to different or think too much in order to remain merged, as a result those rules tend to drift over time which I donât think happens in Asia.
Also, in many strict cultures youâll get some leniency as long as youâre considered as an outsider so things might look great at first but then start close in on you as time passes and people get to know you. Learning French affected my accent in Spanish slightly and I have used this from time to time to pass as a clueless foreigner. But obviously, this only works with strangers.
I live in a sparely populated city and feel suffocated by the culture, not the amount of people. But crowded places are not as enjoyable IMHO.
I swear there was another case where the person just spit chewing gum on the sidewalk or something.
They call it the fine city for a reason, drinking water in the wrong place will get you finedâŠ
including from graffiti.
I do hate graffiti.

Ideally you want people who donât need the threat⊠Although this is rare⊠![]()

Donât be a dick.
I donât think that the country where you are matters. Thatâs an important rule regardless of the place.
Culturally you will fit right back in and be happy

Do note that Iâm fluent in English, Spanish, and French. Not so much in Portuguese. Maybe I should also ask @Az_F as well. Although Iâm probably not moving to France.
Also, something thatâs important to me is easy access to Amazon, a supplier like Mouser, and other online stores. Sure, you can get almost anything through customs with little to no scrutiny if you use snail mail, but itâs slow and many stores will not use it for international orders.
Finally, hereâs something I came across thatâs related to the theme of the thread:
Who the hell urinates in a lift!? Why did they have to write that law!?

Likely because utter bastards weâre peeing in the lifts! Lol
Starting with how good is the respect of individuality and self expression? How difficult is it to order something from the US? How difficult is it to make friends? And most importantly, which countries are worth looking into if you value freedom and self expression?
Well about France, and on average and based on my experience ofc:
Individuality and self expression, nobody cares as long as it doesnât affect them in their own lives. Of course thereâs some hate but nowhere close to the extremes you see in the us for example. Worst case they will look at you weird and ignore you.
Order from the US, quite easy as long as it doesnât involve lithium batteries⊠Some US vendors forget that other countries exist but thereâs usually an alternative.
Friends are easy to make superficially, people will gladly have a chat in a bar. But if you want deeper relationships being part of smaller communities, groups or clubs will help. Your lack of shared culture will be both a disadvantage and a bonus.
About the countries, something Iâve noticed is that more âruralâ countries (Mediterranean, east, west) value strong family relationships, pride and togetherness but will also be less tolerant to deviance, will always be a few years late on trends, tech and mentality.
More âmodernâ countries (northern, central) are quite up to date with the rest of the world on trends and tech, the latest coolest things will be available to you and nobody will give a shit about you. On the downside, nobody will give a shit about you, relationships are not as strong and are often based on some transaction or benefit. They are quite lonely and sad countries on average.
Right now Iâm in Norway and Iâm realizing that Scandinavian countries are a decent mix of both.
Your lack of shared culture will be both a disadvantage and a bonus.

From a cultural point of view
If you want to be a robot, or dress up as a robot, Japan is the place for you, nobody will look twice.
Language might be an issue though, far fewer Japanese speak anything other than Japanese than I expected.
They do like to practice english with you though.

Considering that they hate tattoos, that might only work until people realize that youâre more than a fancy gadget⊠Although they do have a rather interesting looking cosplay scene.
Another important thing is that you canât really tell how relationships work in a culture by talking to random strangers. You donât get the same experience as a tourist as superficial conversations tend to be nice in most places, especially with foreigners. But you can often find significant differences in things like friendships, coworkers, dating, etcâŠ
Although kinda suspect that you want to have me nearbyâŠ

Iâm going to keep looking into Europe. A big reason is thatâs where my roots are from, I am a citizen, and donât need to think about visas or residence permits. However, that should not be the only criteria.
Now if only you could own a German tank for beer purposesâŠ
Mate, seriously you need to move.
I hate to say it but I have had many good mates seriously hurt themselves because of external factors like this and because they have not made changes in time.
You are clearly very unhappy and have recognised it. You have identified the causal factors. It is always hard to go but you seriously need to start thinking about starting somewhere new and where you will be happy.
Will do, thereâs a lot of planning ahead but itâs worth it.

Itâs a video, and I know that it wonât embed right because Twitter⊠But still, Thatâs a cool bottle opener!
When you are in France and miss your train by 5 seconds and have to wait 6 hours for the next bloody one.
On the bright side, the annoying child and the wife got on, leaving me with the favourite child!
On the even brighter side, there is a brewery nearby. Now I just have to be careful not to miss the next one.
During the holidays, I had a sleep deprived, annoyed, and frustrated realization about Facebookâs internet(dot)org âcharityâ.
Collectivist third world cultures hate when someone decides to have âmeâ time and will send a lot of interruptions your way to get that person to comply and join the group.
Want to get away from the noise for a few hours to read a book? Some family member will try to get you to join the rest of the bunch to watch some TV series that you donât care about. Want to sit down to think for a while? You will be interrupted and pressured to join some group activityâŠ
Telling them that youâre not interested in the group activity, but that youâre willing to invite them to dinner later that day will not stop the calls, messages, etc⊠In other words, itâs hard to get away from the endless stream of distractionsâŠ
This also spreads to the way things are planned; in such a culture things time is managed through unspoken consensus, through âvibesâ. In other words, itâs a school of fish in which every member acts based on what they sense from others. And if you try to coordinate things by appealing to a schedule or try to get to a spoken long term consensus, you will get nowhere. And by long term, I mean longer than the next 15 minutes. The next 2 hours is too muchâŠ
When referring to a culture, this falls under collectivism and polychronism. And hereâs the realization that I had:
Thatâs exactly how social media companies seek to break your attention and take it completely⊠Want to look up some reviews before making a purchase? Hereâs an endless feed of shorts. Working on a project? Hereâs a notification about puppies! Just woke up? Look at all the things that people who youâll probably never meet are doing! And donât forget to get enraged because of what a politician from another country said⊠That last one is of crucial importance!
What about time? Forget about that, doomscrolling is easier⊠Attention to a platform that serves as a proxy for a group is all there is in that worldâŠ
If you think about it, it makes perfect sense fror Facebook to subsidize access to itâs platform in places with said cultures. The psychological work is already done.
Of course, the mind is capable of much more than following a group and individuation is a very important part of maturity. Deep abstract thought can only exist in an individual mind. Sure, minds can exchange ideas, but the thought process is carried out individually.
Once youâve had a taste of maturity and individuality, you will resist efforts to reduce you back into dependent child. So it makes sense to establish a presence in places where the culture stunts maturity even if this prevents them from having the budget for mobile dataâŠ
When you are in France and miss your train by 5 seconds and have to wait 6 hours for the next bloody one.
From what Iâve heard, in Germany you can wait for the previous train which is severally delayedâŠ
I met an english family. They were so nice and offered to take us in for the evening. However French rail seems to be on-time for a change.
I would much rather stay in my favourite country drinking wine and beer than go elsewhere!
TIL something about Nintendo games⊠But it makes sense for a collectivist society to do things like that.
Also, the only switch Iâm buying is a network switchâŠ
Bebi champanhe em Lisboa hojeâŠ
Am I doing this right, @TSMC55? Or not drunk enough for this thread?
@Pilgrimsmaster: Are the following pictures somewhat related to the parts of the Lisbon that you visited? Or did you stick to Chiado and the armadilha para turistas parts of the city?
