Iā€™m thinking that might be my routeā€¦
Itā€™s only 30$ more than what I can find used but Iā€™m feeling like Facebook shadow banned me or somethingā€¦ nobody I message on marketplace responds or even reads my messages

Coincidentally after I left a negative review for someone not including necessary parts and ghosting me

Marketplace always plays weird games and feels like Iā€™m frequently gas lit lol

Iā€™ve had great success on marketplace but Iā€™m also normally just buying tools

Iā€™ve had a number of watches over the years, but my daily driver used to be a dive watch.
My last watch before going to Smart watches was a Suunto D4i

Not pretty, but a good dive watch, and had Bluetooth connectivity to a pressure sensor

Thanks to this conversation , When I grabbed the image above, I see there is a recall on these units, I might need have to look at that when I am back home, although Iā€™ve never had a problem with them

My watches since then:

Samsung Galaxy Frontier
Samsung Galaxy Watch 4
Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro
Samsung Galaxy Ultra

I have a few watches but the one I use the most is a cheap Casio. The o rings on some of my better watches have been in service for several years so I have a cheap watch that I can abuse without the need for pressure tests. My second most used watch is a Tissot Gentleman.

How long did the smart watches last?

mmmm Tissotā€¦

I only have two valuable watches. One a Speedmaster, and another is more sentimental. a Bulova given to my Grandfather from the city for almost 20 years of service.

Iā€™ve been using the Galaxy watch 4 classic for ~3 years now and its still going strong. I have AOD, location, and NFC turned off and the battery still lasts me about 2 days. I get a little over 1 day of battery with everything turned on.

Iā€™ve thought about getting a speedy but ultimately decided to go with the cheaper Gentleman. This Tissot was a bit cheaper and I like the silicon hairspring, freesprung balance, and automatic winding.

I like my nice watches and should wear them more often.

I almost never wear my nice watches.

Iā€™m far too careless and kind of a neanderthal. So I didnā€™t mind trashing my shinola. Itā€™s been serviced now twice in three years.

The speedy is more of a bucketlist watch. Big sci-fi fan so of course I wanted the moon watch.

I just dont trust electronics with life support ā€¦ i had to many computer drown on a dive :unamused:
I still dive with dive slates and doublecheck teh computer decomp time.

high end watch with good quality quartz do not get scratched easily, I have dragged mine through hell and concrete and its still scratch free ā€¦ im amazed how well its holding up.

Sapphire crystals are even better, that material is almost as hard as a diamond. And the few nice watches that I have donā€™t have scratches because of this.

Speaking of materials engineering, I was messing with some carbon fiber reinforced parts earlier today, and I want more of this stuff in my life, itā€™s amazingly rigid!

The newer watches last longer, and as mentioned, depends on how you use them.
I use most functionalities and would get about 3.5 days out of it.
My older Frontier I would get about 2days from it.

BUT

They have a number of power saving modes and you can customise.

If you wanted the watch only, and only turns on display when you rotate your wrist to look at it.
older watches youā€™ll get about 3 weeks, newer, you get about a month.

I dont use that functionality though, or i wouldnā€™t bother owning a smart watch.

power saving is an easy toggle though, so if its running low on power, you can buy yourself upto many days if you go conservative

I remember discovering that carbon fiber is also detectable in a metal detector, pretty interesting

I wasnā€™t talking about the battery life. I meant the durability as a product. After all, software updates and support matter a lot with these things and the reason why Iā€™ve thought about getting one is because Samsung removed a bunch of features from their phones, including the blood oxygen sensor.

But considering that I enjoy the analog nature of my Tissot and the fact that it will last longer than my phone by at least an order of magnitude, Iā€™m probably going to give my money to Amal instead of Samsung.

This brings up a question Iā€™ve had trying to figure out how to intergrate a wearable into my life

When do you smart watch users charge?

Iā€™m highly interested in the blood ox sensor due to some ongoing sleep apnea stuf and Iā€™d like to compare blood ox to AHI numbers

sleep apnea stuff

Iā€™ve had untreated OSA for yearsā€¦ but itā€™s never bothered me, fall asleepā€¦ roll onto sides of stomachā€¦ w/e

Never had any of the sleepiness or other symptomsā€¦ and I had a lack of follow up care to help me deal with some cpap strugglesā€¦ so I said fuck itā€¦ and went back to regular life

12 years later and Iā€™m seeing some possible blood pressure stuff as a result so Iā€™m trying to get on top of it

Back on the machine now, and I feel little to no improvement in my overall being throughout the day,ā€¦ many report feeling like a new personā€¦
I still feel exactly the sameā€¦ so either Itā€™s not fixing itā€¦ or I am super tolerant to feeling like shit?

yet my machine indicates acceptable treated dataā€¦ so Iā€™m interested in blood ox throughout the night

So Iā€™m looking to wear it thru the nightā€¦.

Maybe charge at work or something?

my bad, thats what I initially thought you meant.

Good.
Pretty robust, but they are not G-Shocks

They take a beating, and show normal wear and tear but ive never had one break.
Worst Iā€™ve had was a broken pin on a strap.

Samsung also have a range of low profile covers which protect them very well without distracting from the aesthetics.
The sell sceen protectors also.

I always have a screen protector, and for the most part use a cover.

Valid question,
itā€™s kind of a juggling act but easy to manage.

And itā€™s easier with the newer watches like I said, the batteries last longer. So get a few days to not even worry about it.
But normally Iā€™d look for an opportunity of inactivity to charge it up and again. The newer ones take a faster charge. So even a short charge. Weā€™ll give you a significant battery Top-up.all that to say itā€™s pretty easy to.

better answer a bit later

I have the galaxy 5. It lasts a day and a half with everything on, so I charge it every second night.

That said, it charges pretty quickly and I think you could get into a habit of putting it on charge while you do something pretty routine each day, like cook dinner or something and that would likely give it enough to wear every night.

Was at work today. Doing nothing, nothing to do.
Had to describe my role on a job as ā€œEmotional Support Machinistā€.

So, thereā€™s that.

I could use an Emotional Support Machinistā„  for those long unproductive days that are full of meetings and random errands, or when trying to convince someone who doesnā€™t understand engineering about making a decision thatā€™s not utterly stupidā€¦

My emotional support machinist is always this old Tony or inheritance machining
