Thatā€™s nice. I wish we could carry this sort of thing here but itā€™s not with the hassle. It would come in so handy.

The offence for carrying a knife requires you to prove reasonable excuse where I live.

Plus they have now introduced ā€œwandingā€ (hand held metal detector search) at shopping centres, event venues, public transport and a tonne of other places. No warrants required, it can be approved by a Sergeant of Police and everyone subjected to it.

Welcome to Australia where only the crims have guns, knives and rights.

Same for me:

Every person is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 months or a fine not exceeding $2,000 who, in any public place, without reasonable excuse, ā€¦

I have carried a knife since I recived my first at 5 years oldā€¦
Iā€™d claim it as a part of myself and my religion or some shit.
My knife can identify a sikh kirpan or scottish skene-dhu

A knife is a tool, its the intent that makes it a weaponā€¦

Oh, FFS!

Have you two considered stabbing, or better yet, shooting your politicians? Thatā€™s fusking ridiculous!

I donā€™t think Iā€™d be able to tolerate the wanding treatment for long before deciding to move to another country and I donā€™t carry a knife very often.

Lol. Me too. My dad got me one at the old ā€œAmbulance Standā€. They used to sell stuff to fund their services as the Govt didnā€™t fund them back then.

Yeah, I agree itā€™s a utility. I am confident of defending myself if charged but it is a real hassle if I was charged (and I am former police, so know they will simply charge and let the court sort it).

I need to have an authority to work in my profession and any charges trigger a reporting requirement which in turn can lead to suspension pending trial. So t is simply not worth the risk to me.

I donā€™t really have an issue with the gun laws here. I think they need to be loosened a bit so the average punter can do some hunting etc but we are used to them now as a country.

The knife stuff arose because of juvenile crime. They are out of control at the moment. I wish though, the law allowed people over 21 or so to carry a knife for utility purposes which would still address the juvenile issue.

Truth is bikies etc make their own guns now and only the crims carry. Our police shootings have also gone through the roof. Normally we would have one every few years. Now it is 4 or 5 a year. I know this is nothing for the US, but here itā€™s really over the top (I should add the shootings have all been completely justified and lawful. Nothing like the issues in US).

And donā€™t get me started on the great policy which puts the seriously mentally ill back I to the community with pretty much no supportā€¦ But hey, we spend a fortune on 'welcome to countryā€™s ceremonies, so I suppose itā€™s all good.

Just like Colombia with itā€™s gun controlā€¦ But the Colombian police is easy to bribe so they donā€™t often get shot, they make some extra money insteadā€¦

I voted with my feet on a significant amount of ā€œgreat policiesā€.

Re the police, we donā€™t really have that problem and havenā€™t for over 30 years. However the current crop are very much touchy feely and I would not bother calling them if one of my family were hurt.

Re voting with your feet, I agree. Unfortunately I have kids and a life style (read great wine and food) which I simply donā€™t want to leave.

I expect to move to Europe though when I retire and the kids are finished uni. Not sure where yet but I speak German and am slowly learning French so will likely be around thereā€¦ Plus I love Italy but not sure if that is just me being a tourist. Living there could be different.

This some kind of brand name clothing store?

Yup. Shoes or something, wasnā€™t paying attention, I was too obsessed with the good vibes. Pun intended

I have a few stories about fake transistors. Including some BJTs that didnā€™t have the correct pinoutā€¦ And some mosfets that did not match the absolute maximum ratings by an order of magnitude.

Still, itā€™s kinda weird for a finished productā€¦ But most LED bulbs run pretty hot and the thermal protection doesnā€™t always work so I guess it shouldnā€™t be surprising.

Being that
Your ā€œnameā€ is Ham
You are a Radio Ham
And you are long pork

You are basically:

I reverse engineer electronics a lot and the electronics industry has fallen off a cliff over the past 10 years. Yes things are easier than ever to produce, but the functionality is only getting more complex which raises the bar needed to make a ā€œqualityā€ product, and global capital consumerism paired with greater wealth disparity has driven a race to the bottom as far as cost and quality. Honestly I donā€™t know why people are surprised, this is the inevitable trajectory. China would be stupid not to game the system like they do.

More and more I find I need to make things myself, adapting or arranging open source projects. When you said you didnā€™t think the brands would matter, I couldnā€™t help but laugh. Supply chain management and part sourcing are huge for me, so like you said seeing so much stuff out of spec and poorly documented Iā€™ve just come to expect garbage

Sameā€¦ Not that long ago, I was frustrated as I couldnā€™t find a smart lock that wasnā€™t designed in China in the local market.

I expect the same under certain circumstances and recently avoided the Chinese brands like the plague while buying an air conditioner and a bunch of access points.

I guess that Iā€™m mentally struggling to process the stuff thatā€™s nice enough to last for a few years but not nice enough to last as long as the stuff that I design.

I still expect no-name power adapters to last for a long time as long as they are UL/ETL/TƜV listed. And I was dumb enough to expect simple things like Qi chargers and desk lamps to behave like this. And yet I know that LED bulbs are a gamble, even the brand name onesā€¦ I also realize that if a power adapter dies after 4~6 years, I doubt that Iā€™d find outā€¦

Sorry, but while Iā€™m familiar with the problem, I still struggle to process it at times and was expecting it to be limited to some product categories because I wasnā€™t really thinking.

Iā€™m an idiotā€¦

:flushed: :man_facepalming:t2:

I knowā€¦ And Iā€™m now remembering all the work that I did in the open source 3D printer side of thingsā€¦ You should see how badly designed most of the commercially available boards are, I almost got an aneurism from looking at Chinese schematics and jokingly mentioned that everyone in the project I was working on should ask for a raiseā€¦

TP-Link has done the same. And their stuff doesnā€™t lastā€¦

Once again, Iā€™m an idiot and the totally of this problem hasnā€™t fully clicked yet.

talk about an unwanted and overdone ceremony.
Just a cash grab guit tripā€¦enough is enough, it just creates division.

Welcome to country is as bad as the haka in NZ, done at the drop of a hat, everywhere, all the timeā€¦too much, just stop.

At least the haka doesnā€™t cost us anythingā€¦

At least the Haka has some legitimacy. We now have all these academics which are coming out with different ideas. Our federal govt spent over $450k on welcomes last year.

If they (the Govt) was for real, this could have gone to health, education and violence intervention measures and actually achieved something.

We have an election due by May. Likely in April. Canā€™t wait.

Plus cost of living is out of control and they have no idea on how to fix itā€¦

My wife is a NZ citizen. I may move over there shortly

On what to do instead of the stupid ceremony or for ways to make the ceremonies even stupider?

Knowing academics, itā€™s probably the latterā€¦

ROFLMAO! Thatā€™s not how governments work!

Trueā€¦ But governments will government in those areas as wellā€¦

  1. Yes. Being published is all that counts. Bugger evidence. It really is setting us back as a nation. The current prime minister wanted to amend our constitution to allow for a ā€œvoice to parliamentā€ for our first nations people. He did this despite it being obvious it would be majorly defeated. It basically divided the nation. Plus our constitution allows for the federal govt to make laws for first nations, so there was simply no need to entrench something into the constitution (I am involved heavily in legislation development and seriously we have never made a stupid mistake requiring changes because of unexpected outcomesā€¦ So letā€™s entrench it in the constitution and give no detail on what we plan to do)!

  2. Exactly

  3. ā€œGovernā€ lol. Again, exactly.
