Enthusiastic newbie is looking for advice

Got it, those are definitely on the list down the line, but the flexDF is like less than half the price and with an easier install, considering that for flexSecure and/or Apex Flex/ring conversion I would definitely go for the spectrum package.
Also, is there a particular reason one would go for the flexNT over the flexDF? They’re the same cost, seem to perform similar functions NFC-wise, except the DesFire chip has more storage, encryption, and can run DesFire appletts, so it seems to me like the flexDF is plainly the better option, unless I’m missing something important about the NTAG chip.

The only blatant thing that I am aware of, is that DESFire cards seem to take a while to read from phones.

The phone will often sit there, see the tag, read all 8kb, then notify the user “this tag has contact info, add it to contacts?” This could take a second or two, which is not ideal when trying to rub someone’s phone on your hand.

The NTAG 216, having roughly 10% of the storage will take less time to read.

On paper, if the only thing a person wanted was a way to share contact info, the flexNT would be their best option.

For what it’s worth, I have a NExT, 2 xSIID s, and an xG3 magnet, and a friend of mine who is a nurse did all my installs. They refused anything that would require a scalpel, so my plans for a Flex were put on hold for a bit. My doctor said she would be very interested, but she was unable to legally do an install for me.

I use my NExT every day, and the xSIIDs are fun. I mostly use them to pass secret messages to and from my partner and for account passwords.

This also happens on Apex with large ndef data. Annoyingly the delay happens even if I’m trying to do other things like generate OTP codes. Android will probe the entire tag first before handing it off to any apps like Apex Manager. Not sure if iPhone does the same.

Maybe a bit off topic, but would you all have any ideas to make the NFC reader a bit more secure? Switching on a relay after recognizing the UID from my implant would be great as is, but I really like the idea of a cryptographic function, so that no one could easly copy the key to my bike.
I looked at VivoKey’s Verify API, but that needs internet connection, which won’t work for this particular application. Maybe I could do something with the DESFire chip, but are there any compact DESFire reader modules I could connect to a microcontroller? As much as I love the slim profile of my Honda Rebel 500, it unfortunately doesn’t give me much room to work with.

Maybe put the chip in your butt and put the reader in the seat? Serious proposal.

Don’t tempt me you little devil you. I’d rather have my ass intact for the foreseeable future

The easy answer, the ApexFlex or FlexSecure range, and if you wan MAX storage there are varients within the FlexSecure
161kb up to 290kb

Is that because you like the blinky?
Because, for performance and less realestate, I would point you toward the Module.
that thing is fucken outstanding.

Antenna performance, The FlexNT is a surprise package.
It is a super good option for a dedicated “Business card”
If you were to get a module Apex or Secure, you could set that up to do be a business card, and the performance would be better, but otherwise, your FlexNT would be my reccommend.
Unless you wanted and used the DES functions of the FlexDF (Most people dont, and just use it as storage) So unles your business card is huge…

Some other ideas for business card sharing

I miss Rosco and his projects!!!

Of course I like the blinky. And on a more serious note I personally really appreciate when devices have some sort of user feedback, so that I know that the’re alive and working. For the Apex Ring conversion (which I’ll probably go for before the flexSecure) I definitely want the light so that I know if my payment is alright, or I’d risk looking… erm… delayed in a french fashion… while smashing my wrist against the terminal in public wondering if the thing is broken or I just can’t quite catch the reader.
For the flexSecure I’ll probably go for the Module, since performance would be the motivating factor for getting it as well later in the first place.

I want to use it primarily for the storage, but I’ll be keeping text information rather than using it for a dedicated business card. On the other hand maybe I’ll just add the flexNT to the list as well, I’ll see after I check if the NExT v2 will be sufficient for what I’d need first.

I know that people have made DIY Disney MagicBand readers (you can easily find YouTube video tutorials on that) and that uses DESFire EV1 IIRC, so you could probably make use of the same chip as those projects to make use of the flexDF’s more advanced features.

readers?

Disney THEMED- Generic Arduino RFID reader - would be more accurate

Also,
FUCK YOU
:fu: Disney :fu:

Me too

The edge of the UI does a little flash for approved or denied also

That’s neat. My Motorola Edge does something similar with notifications. In addition to vibrating it lights up the beveled edges of the screen slightly, so that it’s not too glaring when facing up, and you see it even when facing down. I wish more apps used their UI more cleverly like here, toasts and pop-ups for feedback are getting a bit stale imo.

not to let the cat out of the bag too early but Soon™ there will be a pretty kick-ass update to Apex Manager on Android thanks to @hoker
